I didn't want to show how much the apology that Marry had given meant to me, because most people just laughed at me for being 'over dramatic.' But I couldn't help it and had to think about it over and over again, though I didn't have any time to give this situation more thought.

Because the only thing occupying my mind as soon as we hit the 2nd floor was my friend standing on a table. Usually, I am not surprised about people becoming extroverted all of a sudden on their birthday, (it's a phenomenal I witnessed quite a lot) but this was weird, considering that Ivy was a very decent person. Never talking too much and always being very polite, I couldn't help but think something was off and soon it would all make sense.

While standing on the table in her beautiful white suit (which made her look like a bride-to-be), she started talking about being thankful for everyone coming and just the usual 'finally, I am 17, thank you everyone for spending this precious moment with me' stuff.

But suddenly, the whole speech took a total turn, and she began to speak about love and how she longed for it her whole life, and I immediately knew where this was heading. I couldn't believe it! She hadn't told me.

After a few more sentences, the predictable happened. A beautiful red-haired girl made her way through the crowd to the very front of the row and up the table. Then Ivy's incredibly long, kitschy but cute speech ended with her dropping the sentence "And this, everyone. This is my girlfriend," and her kissing her fairy-like looking girlfriend, and everyone applauded with incredible joy and enthusiasm.

But suddenly, in the corner of my eye, I could see how Marry just abruptly turned around and ran downstairs like it was for her dear life.

Not quite sure what was wrong, but worried for her, I just ran after her while everyone was congratulating the new couple.

Given the fact that I was some good 5 centimeters taller than her and had much longer legs, it wasn't too hard to catch up, so I took her arm, which made her turn around.

I felt like my heart dropped. Tears were covering her whole face, and the area around her eyes had turned red from a aggressive try to wipe away her tears, before I could see them.

"What's wrong? What happened?" I asked while taking her other hand as well, to show her reassurance and that even though she didn't like me so much, she could talk to me.

"Nothing," she said while shaking off my hands and turning around again. "Don't just walk away," I said, still very confused about what happened. When it suddenly hit me.

No way, but it was the only explanation. Marry Clark liked my best friend, and suddenly everything made sense. All the times where she stared at me and Ivy for so long that I got worried her eyes might just shrink together because she didn't blink for a concerning amount of time made sense. All the times when I asked myself if she was about to chop my head off when I hugged Ivy for a longer time made sense. All this time she had been jealous. Then something else hit me.

Mary just saw her crush kissing and confessing her love to another girl, right in front of her.

"You like Ivy?" I yelled with a tone that suggested more of a statement than a question, and suddenly she turned around, giving me all her attention.

With giant paces, she walked over to me, stopping about fifty centimeters right in-front of me, looking up to my face with a furious and still very sad look in her eyes. "Stop talking nonsense," she said with an angry but not convincing enough tone in her voice,
which couldn't make me believe I actually really talked nonsense, so I just answered, "No," being ready to get punched at any second.
