It was a chilly January night of the year 2004, when the doorbell of a fairly decent looking household is rung. With the snow falling in Pataudi. a tall yet meek woman in her mid-20s answers the door, only to find a shabby looking young man standing in-front on her with grave expressions.
"Yes?" the woman breathed. "Can I help you?" she asked.
The man said nothing. Just handled her a bundle of blankets wrapped around something small. "Keep her safe for me, will ya?" He replied in a gruff voice.
The woman accepted whatever this man gave and asked him to join her, maybe for a cup to tea. He looked frozen and she almost felt bad for the man, until she peeked through the blankets and her eyes widen.
"What the hell?" she whispered.
The man was already leaving so she called him out in a hurry. "Hey! Where are you going? Whose child is this? Why did you give it to me?" she asked panicked.
The man looked at the woman with weak eyes and said, "Because if this kid is with me, she'll be dead in minutes." he said.
But the woman was having none of it.
She ran after the man but soon realized that his body was twitching and he was gasping for air. The woman supported the baby with her one arm while she tried to help the unknown man.
The man was now crouching down in pain and within seconds coughed up blood. The woman's eyes widened in horror. "I'm going to call an ambulance! Hold on," she said as she fished out her phone from her pants back pocket.
"NO!" the man screamed. "Don't. Just keep her safe for me." he begged. And placed a hand on his heart. "Please," he whispered.
The woman saw the man take his last breath. she was his voice die down, the warm air coming from his nostrils become cold and his eyes close to escape this cruel world.
She wiped the tear that escaped her eye and looked at the baby girl who was awake now, looking at her with her brown eyes, as if trying to figure out who this lady was.
The woman averted her eyes from the baby and made a call.
"Hello? Police?" the woman said while she cradled the baby to her chest.
