Saylor's POV:
I examine my outfit once more in my mirror. White dress that hugs my curves, jewels, and a halo head piece.
I'm no angel, but we can pretend for the night.
I put on my white heels and grab Emerson's bomber jacket before heading down stairs, trying to be quick so my parents don't have time to see my outfit.
Each step, I make sure to be very light on... that is until my foot lands on the bottom stair, causing it to creak loud enough to let people know I'm there.
"Shit." I whisper under my breath.
I hold out hope that maybe my parents aren't near and no one heard anything... until I hear my dad say my name in the living room.
I try to tiptoe towards the door and sneak out before he sees, but apparently, he's even stealthier and faster than me as I hear him say, "that's very revealing."
I sigh as I spin on my heel to face him, "how can you even tell? I have a jacket over my outfit."
"It's the end of October, Saylor and you don't have pants on. I can tell whatever is underneath is going to be revealing, also it's Halloween... I know better." He explains.
My mom pats my dad's shoulder, "she's 26, Keith. Let her live."
My dad shakes his head as he heads back into the living room, my mom rushing over to me with a smile as she pulls the jacket open to get a peak at what I'm wearing.
"Scandalous, you must be looking for the attention of a very special boy." My mom says with a glint in her eye.
I swallow thickly as I try to hide my tensing. What will you do for Emerson? Ophelia's words swarm my head. I could lose her if I don't show I'm ready to advance with her. It's up to me to decide if whatever we have is important enough to possibly come out for.
"Very special girl." I correct with hesitancy.
My mom's eyes soften, "girl?"
I nod, feeling emotional by her softness and the words finally escaping my lips.
"Do I know her?" My mom asks softly.
I nod, scared that if I speak, my voice will crack as tears brim my eyes.
It's hard to explain the feelings I'm experiencing. Relief? I was so nervous, despite knowing how loving my parents are, so to see my mom hardly bat an eye at my admission makes me feel so thankful, so loved, and so emotional.
She's the first family member to know other than my sister, but I never feared Sydni's response. Sydni did so much in her life, I knew she wouldn't judge me, but my mom or let alone, my dad? That was different.
I nod as a few tears slip out, "you're not upset, right?"
My mom softly chuckles as she pulls me in for a loving hug, "Saylor, why would I ever be upset?"
I shrug, "I don't know, maybe you had ideas of the future you wanted for me and now I'm letting you down."
My mom parts from me as she cups my cheeks, "Saylor, this is your life, not mine. You live for yourself, never anyone else. You know yourself better than anyone, so love whoever makes your heart happy."
Tears of joy stream down my face and I feel my whole body relax. I'm so thankful to have her for a mom. I wouldn't replace her for the world.
"Now stop crying, bug. You'll mess up your makeup." She says as she begins to fan my face.
