I exited the school and fast walked across the parking lot. I crossed the street and entered Midfield Drive, and sprinted home. I know being home sucked but Lena doesn't get home until like 5 o'clock and it was only 3 right now, so I had some time.
I walked up to the porch and slid my key into the deadbolt lock and shoved the door open. I stepped inside to see Josh sitting on the couch with a few of his buddies. I shut the door behind me and walked into the kitchen.
"How was your first day back?" Josh chuckled.
"It sucked" I laughed in response.
Josh was pretty much my only friend here, he just understands how I feel cause he was in the same position when he was my age. I guess you can say we both have definitely felt the wrath of Lena.
"Make any friends?" he questioned.
"Yeah just one though, his name is Adam" I responded.
I opened up the kitchen cabinets to reveal that they were all empty. I scanned the entire kitchen searching for something to eat, I walked to the fridge and pulled out a tub of yogurt and a bowl. I put the rest of the yogurt that filled the container in the bowl and tossed it into the trash. I slid open the kitchen drawer and retrieved a spoon.
"Jo is going grocery shopping tonight" Josh explained. "Atleast he somewhat cares, even though he's almost never here."
I have to admit Jo is a good foster dad but he's just never really here, he fights with Lena a lot so he kind of likes to stay away from her. When Lena is away on work he normally comes around and when he is he's pretty cool.
I took my yogurt and walked down the hallway and into my bedroom. I was starving so I didn't hesitate on eating my yogurt even though I had plenty of things to do. I kept thinking about Adam, and how I was going to not have him go out tomorrow.
I pulled out my phone and texted the number he had given me and waited for a response. About 10 minutes later my phone beeped, it was him.
Hey:) Anna?
Yeah its me haha:)
Do you wanna hangout after school tomorrow. I have some family stuff right after school but do you wanna hangout around like 7 ish?
I thought to my self before I responded. I was going to be home alone tomorrow night. I though maybe he could come here and we could have a bit of a chat just in case. Although there won't be much talking I still think it would be safer if became here.
I'm gonna be home alone tomorrow night since my brother and parents are going to this specialist for his spine. Do you wanna come here? we could watch a movie or something.
I waited for him to respond which seemed like forever.
Yeah okay. text me ur address later:)
I turned off my phone and continued running over my plan in my head. I had to make sure that he didn't leave my sight tomorrow. That means I would pretty much have to go into wolf stalking mode, so I began mapping out my strategies. I finally finished my plan around 5 o'clock, it was flawless, surprisingly I've never been more proud of myself.
The front door squealed open as someone clumsily entered the living room, I'm assuming it was Lena stumbling in drunk. I quickly ran and slammed my bedroom door before she would start screaming at me. She really needs to get help for her overwhelming anger issues. I heard her walk to the kitchen and start rummaging through the cabinets, I'm assuming looking for her liquor.
The cabinet doors opened and shut multiple times, I was waiting for the screams to come but surprisingly they never did. After spending some time in the kitchen she walked to her bedroom and fell asleep. Her heart rate slowed as she drifted into a sound sleep, she breathed softly as she drifted into REM.
I continued to run over the plan in my head making sure there were no gaps. My plan had to be perfect, there was no room for mistakes, I had to do this, I just had to. I laid down in my bed letting myself sink into the warmness of the soft mattress. I closed my eyes and began to drift into REM when I began to hear sirens outside our house.
"Seriously" I yelled throwing myself out of bed.
I drowsily walked down the hallway and looked out the living room window, police cars piled into the driveway as some exited their cars. I hid behind the couch and watched them come up towards the porch. They banged on the door demanding to have someone come and open it, I started to crawl back to my bedroom when the door burst off it's hinges and file into the wall across from it.
I sat on the middle of the floor and stared at the officers who had their guns pointed at my face. My heart raced and my breathing sped up to scared to utterly terrified. They continued to stare at me and lowered their guns till they were finally returned to their holsters.
"We are looking for Lena Vaskez or her husband Jo" a dark skin man spoke firmly.
"U-um... Lena is in her room, and I-uh have no idea where Jo is" I stuttered.
Three policemen walked towards the hallway with their hands on their guns. The busted her bedroom door open and walked in slowly. Two shots were fired when I heard a scream, it was Lena. I ran to the room to see Lena lying on the floor with two bullets in her leg, she whimpered in pain as the officers grabbed her and placed her in handcuffs. An officer called me into the living room and asked me to sit on the couch.
"Do you know why we are here?" He questioned softly.
"No" I whimpered in response.
"Those bruises on your cheek say otherwise." He hinted. "Your mother hit you didn't she? Don't worry, you can tell me. I'm here to help you."
"She's not my mother" I argued. "And seriously why would you come bursting through the door at 2 in the morning?"
"Your father, Jo, reported that she had been abusing her children for some time now," He began. "He never had the courage to say anything till now, but he's glad he did."
"They aren't my parents!" I cried. "They never were and they never will be!"
I sat up from the couch and walked into the kitchen and let out quiet sobs. Tears escaped my eyes and cascaded down my cheeks. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I turned around to see the police officer standing in front of me.
"I know it's hard, but Jo has agreed to be your legal guardian until other arrangements can be made" He whispered.
"okay" I whispered wiping away my tears.
"You can head back to bed," he spoke. "Now that we have Lena in custody you can return to your daily life, that includes getting sleep so run along and get some sleep."
I returned to my room and crawled back into bed. The sirens faded as they drove away, I closed my eyes and drifted into a nice deep sleep. Lena was gone and now I could focus on other things, like Adam.
