She got up from her bed and stupidly knelt down to look under it. But of course there was no one there and then it hit her and she looked towards the wall next to her bed. The room next to her was always empty. Michael .
Reya left her room and now stood opposite the one next to her hers. It used to be a storage room until she had started taking over it and now Mallory and her used it as their own personal hangout room. It made sense that Michael would be in there as it was the only room left unoccupied in the academy but she also worried a little about the cringy posters and pictures of her, Mal and sometimes Coco that took up the space on the walls. She sighed, she will have to take them down now, she knocked on the door. Barely a moment later, Michael opened the door and she sucked in a breath as she saw him. His eyes were red and puffy, his hair seemed to be in a more mess but at least he had changed his clothes. He looked at her surprised and a little unsure but smiled. gosh he really was beautiful.
"Hi, you must be..Reya?" he said shyly and his voice sounded like that of a scared child, and she wanted nothing more than to hug him. "sorry, was I make too much noise? Miss Cordelia got me some things and I was just putting them away, I hope I didn't disturb you" he looked distraught that he might have possibly disturbed the girl and Reya couldn't help but chuckle. "No, no it's quite alright- I- wait" she paused, her eyes narrowing a little "How would you have disturbed me? did you know I was next to you? how do you know my name?", His face changed and he looked even more scared, Reya didn't think she was intimidating but clearly this kid got frightened at anything so she put on a welcoming expression, hoping it would help.
"Miss Cordelia told me" he said hurriedly, "I wasn't spying or anything, I promise. She said you were nice and I could ask you if I needed anything." Oh. She felt bad now. "I didn't say you were spying on me, it's okay. You don't have to be so scared" she said and Michael seemed to visibly relax at her words. Silence descended on them as they looked at each other unsure of what to say and then Reya remembered why she had come."uh, can i come in?" He looked at her, a slight surprised expression on his face but smiled and it warmed her heart. He looked like a kid that had just been offered a lifetime supply of sweets. "Yes, of course! it seems like this is your room anyway" she smiled at him.
"yeah, me and mal- mallory, I'll introduce you to her- used this room as a little sanctuary that was just our own." Michael looked guiltily at her "I'm sorry" he said, his voice sad and Reya couldn't help but actually be bewildered at his personality so far, he seemed to apologise a lot "I can move out, I'll ask Cordelia for a different room-" she held up her hand and he stopped speaking, "Michael. this is your room now, and I don't mind that you have it" She felt like she needed to spell it out for him or else he would start crying again- oh, crying. "also.. I heard you" she looked at him carefully and he stared back with his blue eyes. damn those eyes. "you were crying".
He looked away towards the ground, embarrassment clear in his body language and Reya wished she hadn't brought it up. "sorry" he said, "I didn't mean to" and Reya looked at him and saw the broken boy she had seen a few minutes ago hiding behind Cordelia. she wished desperately to make him feel better. "It's okay" she said, approaching him, and he watched her curiously yet cautiously as if she would disappear if he so much as breathed wrong. Reya sat down on his bad and gestured for him to sit too. He obliged, his body still tense as he looked towards the ground and fiddled nervously with his hands.
Reya thought about taking his hand but then remembered how she had previously promised herself to stay away from him. she chuckled inwardly at that. "I don't want you to cry" she said, quietly, knowing she needed to be patient and kind with him. He continued to look down and she felt as if he might actually cry again.
"I know how hard it is when you first come into the academy" she spoke, trying her best to make him feel better, "it's not easy but you'll get the hang of it." He looked up at her then, his blue eyes glazed with unspent tears and her heart broke at the sight of him, "No one wants me here" he said, his voice cracking, "I know it, they all look at me like I'm some kind of.. monster", He started crying then and Reya couldn't help herself, she instinctively moved to face him and wrap her arms around him. He took her in without complaint and held her tightly. "I didn't choose to be like this" he cried against her and Reya felt a lump growing in her throat at this words.
This is not the anti-christ, she said to herself. He couldn't be. He was too sweet, too innocent, too..lost. He reminded her of a child who'd never experienced love. In the moments he lay in her arms, crying as she stroked his hair and shushed him, she thought of nothing but how to make him better. She now saw what Cordelia had seen and realised she would have taken the exact same decision had she been in her position. He looked as if he was dying for love and attention. For someone to tell him right from wrong, someone to guide him and tell him he wasn't a monster and was capable of love. He wanted someone to tell him that he could be good.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry" he spoke against her and she stroked his hair and wondered what he was sorry about. "I know I shouldn't speak badly about the others, I know they're your sisters. I didn't mean to." He pulled back from her, his hands still on her arms, clinging on. "Please don't be mad". He looked up at her with tearful eyes and Reya felt the pang from earlier. She smiled at him genuinely. "It's okay" she said. "I know some of them can be bitchy, I don't love them all the time either". She didn't mention how she hated most of them. Not because they had demeaned her when she first came, that was part of the reason. But because they were effortlessly more powerful than her. she couldn't help but be jealous. Mallory was an exception.
Michael seemed to calmed down so she pulled away and pat his head. "Okay now, no more crying" she said mockingly and he smiled shyly at her, wiping his tears, "I'm sorry", he said. Reya waved at him dismissively, "don't be, I get it. But I don't want you to think you're alone. I'm here if you need me". Her words seemed to make him light up and he looked at her like adoringly. Like he had found the light at the end of the tunnel. Reya couldn't help but feel her own face light up at his reaction. She realised then that she had just promised to befriend the anti-christ. the bringer of the end of times. The evil incarnate. But for the life of her, she couldn't see him that way.
