NYX'S POV
Chris didn't follow through with his promise of calling back, and I hadn't expected him to. Though, I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. So, to pass the time I did complete my book two, and created a pitch for it. Then, I scheduled the pitch. Most times the pitch would come before the book was even completed, but not this time.
"Nyx, please," Kelly begged. "Focus on this fantasy series. There will need to be a book two, and fantasy does so well! Maybe we can even get you a TV or movie adaptation!" I shook my head.
"That's not what I want--"
"Nyx, listen to us. We have been doing this for a long time. Faye, what is your take?" I looked to Faye who was sitting next to me at my marble kitchen island. Faye's lips thinned into a line, then she popped her mouth.
"Kelly has a point, Nyx." I looked down, disappointed yet again. That seemed to be the theme for the past week.
"Right, so the release party this weekend? Nyx, you gonna have a plus one finally?" She asked this every time, expecting me to change my answer each time.
"Put her down for a plus one--"
"No," I interrupted Faye. "I'm just showing up for my appearance and then going home like I do every time. Don't wast money on extra food and drinks for someone who won't be there." I didn't want to get anyones hopes up, especially mine.
"It's not a big deal, I'll mark it just in case. You know, Nyx, you have needs, too. Not just your characters." I rolled my eyes at Kelly. "Okay, I have it added. See you this weekend!" We clicked off, and I looked over to Faye who was grinning stupidly wide.
"So, Chris?"
"You gave him my fucking number. I ought to fire you as my publicist."
"But he called you didn't he?"
"Yeah, and hasn't talked to me since. He probably did it as a nicety." I walked over to my wine rack and pulled two glasses down, and grabbed a new bottle out of the fridge. "Are you bringing a plus one?" I asked Faye as I poured two glasses of wine, filling mine to the brim.
"You know I always wind up coming without anyone and leaving with someone."
"Yeah, you're gonna be the next case on Forensic Files." I slid her her glass. "Tonight we investigate the mysterious disappearance of the publicist for New York Times Best Selling Author Nyx Ashborne," I joked. Faye rolled her eyes, and sipped her wine.
"Listen, you're just salty because it's been you and your vibrator for the past year since--"
"Do not say his name."
"Lord Voldemort?"
"Basically a synonym for him." Faye rolled her eyes.
"Nyx, you're a beautiful goddess with a banging body and gorgeous long hair. Just call Chris, and see if he will go with you. I bet he will." Faye tipped her glass towards my phone that was sitting on the counter next to my laptop. I shook my head and pulled my black hair up into a messy bun.
"If he was interested he would have called me back by now," I pointed out. Faye rolled her eyes, then reached for my phone. "What are you doing?" She grinned and I watched her scroll, then she put the phone up to her head. "Faye, who are you calling?"
"Chris, hey, it's Faye-- Yeah, Nyx is doing well, she's just working on a new manuscript and I was put in charge of calling you to see what you were doing this weekend on Saturday?" She was silent as she listened to his response. "Perfect! There is a release party this weekend, and she was wondering if you'd be her plus one?" The fucking nerve of this woman right now, I swear. "Awesome! I'll send you her details for you to pick her up!" Faye hung up the phone, and I stared at her with my arms crossed. She handed me my phone back. "You're fucking welcome. He's picking you up at 6:00P.M. on Saturday."
