Nobody was taking notes.
My knee bounced uncontrollably beneath the desk as Ms. Helen continued lecturing.
"Spiritual possession occurs when a soul loses part—or all—of its essence. The resulting disconnect between the summoner and their contracted spirit can—"
I wish I was smart.
Let me correct myself.
I wish I had better focus.
That's what the Sisters of Mercy had said. They weren't very merciful in their words, though.
Mikaela, do you have any plans after high school? Stop.
Do you think that, with the grades you have right now, any college will accept you? Stop.
Your mother worked so hard to get you into this school, and you're just throwing it away.
Shut up!
The lights suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the classroom plunged into darkness. A few students groaned.
The lights blinked back on. Ms. Helen sighed like she'd dealt with this a hundred times already.
"Jenna, weren't the Level A students supposed to be off campus this morning?"
"They were," Jenna answered. "Guess they finished early."
The projector flashed blue before dying completely. Ms. Helen smacked the side of it. Nothing.
"...Wonderful." She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Forget the slideshow. Read pages thirty-five through ninety-six quietly."
Books snapped open around the room.
I blinked.
There's... a textbook?
I felt myself awkwardly raise my hand, and every student took the opportunity to look at me.
"Yes, umm... "Ms. Helen looked at her clipboard. "What is your name?
"Mikaela"
"I don't see your name on my list."
"She just transferred in," Jenna added. "The A class tried to prank our class again by giving her the wrong schedule."
Several students snickered.
Ms. Helen groaned. "Of course they did. And I'm guessing you didn't have any textbooks either..."
"Yeah..."
She disappeared behind her desk before returning with an ancient textbook held together by tape.
"Here." She placed it in front of me.
The book landed with a loud thud.
"You'll need to find Sandra during lunch. She's the only librarian who keeps spare copies."
"...Thanks."
Paranormal school or not... I still sucked at school.
However, socially, I guess I'm slowly thriving?
I was introduced to Sammy during our second period with a full and brutal force.
Sammy was impossible to miss, all bouncing dark‑blonde curls and animated blue eyes. She slid into the space between Jenna and me like she'd reserved it, talking non‑stop.
Question after question, I don't think I even remember the subject of the last class we had.
"So none of your parents are Summoners? I had to complete three tests, an interview, and at one point, they were going to ask for bloodwork!" Sammy said her voice echoed in the halls.
