Chaslynn weaves through an adoring, drunken crowd, searching for Landon.

“Yo, Chaz, some boy was askin’ for ya,” calls out the bartender.

Chaslynn whips around. “Black hair, blue eyes, desperate but trying to hide it?”

“You got that right. He your new boyfriend or something?” the bartender chuckles, and Chaslynn throws him a smoldering glare.

“Okay, okay. He’s out in the back alley. Told him that he’d probably get hurt if he was seen with you.” The bartender points to a bare back door.

Chaslynn nods, returning the bartender’s farewell, opening the door, and collapsing Landon’s arms.

“You made it,” she says into his chest.

“Of course I did, I would never miss it,” he murmurs, “What was that last song about?”

Chaslynn looks up at him, into his tear-filled blue eyes.

“I’m sorry,” she whispers shamefully, “I could have saved you from so much.”

Landon’s smile is impossible to read.

“It’s not your fault… my guardian angel,” he whispers back, and Chaslynn’s heartbeat speeds up.

“Yeah, some guardian angel,” she says quietly, burying her face into his chest again. How do I begin to explain?

“Chaslynn, it really isn’t your fault. I don’t blame you at all!” he pleads, but the weight of her guilt and shame keeps her head bowed.

They go silent for a few moments, until Landon shifts, causing Chaslynn to look up. His eyes are no longer tear-filled, but they have the same desperate, pleading look as they did the first night. He smiles, but Chaslynn does not return it, and it fades away. She just shakes her head, feeling tears bubble up to the surface.

Suddenly, his lips meet hers in a desperate kiss. No, no no, I can’t, I’m-

Chaslynn breaks away abruptly, and the hurt in Landon’s eyes breaks her heart into a million pieces to be picked up by the wind and blown away to the far reaches of the earth.

Landon awkwardly stands in place. “I-I’m sorry, I’m n-not thinking straight,” he pauses, “ I’ve gotta go home.”

Chaslynn watches as he walks away, thoughts swirling like a broken, raging hurricane. Not like this; But I can’t, I’m just gonna mess it up; I can’t do this to him; I can’t do this to myself-

“LANDON, WAIT!” she shouts, and breaks into a run.
