"WE CAN NEVER BE GODS, AFTER ALL—

BUT WE CAN BECOME SOMETHING LESS THAN HUMAN

WITH FRIGHTENING EASE."

Theodore Bishop Sidney II is obsessed with being remembered. As an ignored second son and philosophy student with siblings and cousins his age all doing better than him— he's reached a breaking point.

When he discovers the abandoned writings of the ambitious Severin, Bishop is presented with an opportunity. Severin will give him the recognition he so desires— if he can find him a new body.

This agreement leads Bishop down a trail of murder, deceit, and lies that threatens his relationships with his two unwieldy companions— Mina Prasad and Luthor Callahan— as well as his own sanity.
