Rory's POV
Friday night was the worst shift to have at the pub, the locals were rowdy and aggressive and the non locals were all snobby and demanding. I was taking any opportunity to hide in the back to avoid people, I was pretending to grab more beers from the fridges when Tina came through the doors giggling "Okay, I swear to god Fridays just get worse and worse" she sighed and pulled out her vape to take a few sneaky hits before heading back out there "tell me about it! Some prick asked for a cocktail and laughed at me when I told him we don't have the stuff... like hello asshole everything we have is on that shelf... you can fucking see it" I vented stealing Tina's vape and taking a couple hits for myself
"Oh I think we're being robbed by the way" she casually added, I shot her a puzzled look "it's fine it's fine Bills out there handing it but some giant guy in a balaclava just walked in and sat at the bar" she finished peaking through the doors to see if he was still there, i pushed myself in front of her so I could get a look myself. She was right about the guy in the balaclava but It diddnt look like he was robbing us, he was just sat there holding his balaclava up so he could sip on his pint and pretending to listen as Bill rattled on to him about something.
We watched through the doors for a minute until Bill turned in our direction "shit scatter!" Tina panicked and we both split up to make it look like we were working, "ladies, let's go! Ay Lorelai that guy at the bars asking for you" Bill poked his head through the doors. I groaned "Bill, I love you but please its Rory! Only my mother calls me Lorelai and I hate it" I reminded him for what felt like the 100th time.
I took the beers I was pretending to get out the front with me and slotted them into any available space before turning to the masked man, "boss said you needed me?" I asked raising my eyebrow and studying his eyes, there was something so familiar and comforting about them.
"Don't tell me you've forgotten me already Lol" you could practically see his smirk under the material, there was only one person who ever called me Lol "well, you look and sound a lot like my old friend Simon but he ran away to join the circus or some shit so you couldn't be him" I joked grabbing a cloth and starting to wipe down the bar to distract myself from the pit forming in my stomach.
My mind flooded with the memories of the last time I saw Simon, he had been in the military a little while and was about to go on some big mission that would keep him away for a long time and he couldn't or wouldn't talk about it. "Yeah, something like that" Simon chuckled awkwardly bringing me back to the present.
"The fuck are you doing here Lol? Mr Bennett finally cut you off?" He said just as cocky as I remembered him, "excuse me, you don't get to disappear for 10 years then just show up and start asking questions!" I replied hoping my tone came off as snarky as I wanted it too, he seemed a little taken back for a second before lifting the balaclava over his lips to finish his pint "what time do you finish?" He was looking through his phone to avoid eye contact, "t-twelve" I stuttered when his eyes met mine again "I'll pick you up" he pressed a couple buttons on his phone before putting it to his ear as he headed for the door "who said I was free!" I called back at him, he just looked over his shoulder "you're not. I'm picking you up".
His words turned the pit in my stomach into butterflies as I watched him leave. The rest of the shift was the longest few hours of my life but I diddnt allow myself to think about Simon until everyone was gone and Tina and I were were closing down the bar. "You've seen his face before right?" Tina questioned following me around with a broom while I put all of the chairs up on the tables "yeah but that was well over 10 years ago" I sighed
"So he just runs away to the army for god knows how long and you just stayed here waiting for him?" Tina raised her eyebrows "I was not waiting for him. Omg do you think he thinks I've been waiting for him?" I panicked a little, surely he hasn't been thinking that?. "I dunno..." Tina stalled sweeping under the last table "you are almost exactly where he left you..." she finished smirking, we both know it wasn't true as we met at uni in the Netherlands and shared a flat in Amsterdam for a while until my fathers business started to get messy and he shipped me back to Manchester to "keep me safe". Lucky for me Tina loved adventures so she came with me and we lived together again.
The second the clock struck 12 she was peaking through the curtains out of the windows by the door "he's here!" She squealed and reached her hand out behind her to get me to come and look, I reluctantly took a peak. He was leaning against the black 4x4 my dad bought him years ago dressed in all black himself, balaclava rolled up over his nose while he took lazy drags of a cigarette. Just the sight of him made me feel like a lovesick kid again.
