Your body slammed against the wall, cool and hard. You bit your lower lip at the way he seemed to hate you and love you both in equal measure. His palms were flat on either side of your head, forcing you to stare him down. The familiar ache in your stomach beginning to burn.
Such a sweet, slow gaze peered down at you from behind his shades. He pulled them down his nose and made certain you could see his intention. There was a burning intensity there only you understood.
"What the fuck was that?" He asked, keeping you pinned in place.
Jake was the quiet one. The one who kept his mouth shut until he needed to open it. Jake was cool in a way that had drawn you to him with little help of escape. He'd lit a fire in you the moment you'd heard him speak with his hands, playing soft lullaby melodies on an old acoustic guitar in the garage. You were fifteen. That same fire refused to burn out seven years later.
"What the fuck was what?!" You replied, a defiant smirk betraying you.
Josh wasn't the quiet one. He so effortlessly guided anyone who would listen into deep conversations. It almost seemed like a fair exchange to be friends with Josh. There was a glow about him that could not be found elsewhere, you had to break a piece of yourself off to give to him but it had never not been worth it. His friendship had been your guiding light ever since you'd realised that there was no Jake without Josh.
"You let him...act like he's your boyfriend." Jake scoffed, those eyes appraising you from behind tinted lenses.
You lifted your hands up and pulled them off his face, preferring to argue with him eye to eye.
"Yes, I did." You confirmed, growing more agitated at his tone.
He was crestfallen. His eyes falling to the ground, nervously shuffling his feet in that way he had when he wanted to say something he knew would have consequences. Seven years was a long time to love somebody and still feel jealousy.
The bar had been unflinchingly busy. The usual Thursday jukebox night had turned into something from Road House, instead of it being moderately dead for a bunch of kinda-famous musicians who just liked to kick back without being bothered. It had already slid into chaos by the time Jake arrived, late even by his own standards.
And now he had you in the alley beside the back door, pressed up against the brick with accusations you didn't appreciate and a belly full of tequila that made your head swim. You'd moved to Nashville for him. You'd taken a job you hated. There was a part of you that still yearned to go home. Why couldn't he see that the only thing tethering you to where you stood right now was him?
"Care to explain why?" Jake asked ruefully, his lips quivering beneath more questions.
The corner of your mouth curled upwards and he shook his head.
"What the fuck is the matter with you, Jake?" You finally conceded, "Do you trust me? More so, do you trust your own twin fucking brother?!"
Jake thought about it for a moment. Pursing his lips and staring down the length of the alley back up towards the street. You placed the palm of your hand against his cheek and his eyes closed as if in defeat.
"Of course I trust you both. I don't know what came over me. I walked in there and you looked so...comfortable...with his arms around you like that." He confessed.
The sweetness of his honesty brought you back to where you belonged. He was the man you loved, the man you had given everything up to be with. His flaws were born in his love for you, and it made you immediately want to take him home.
"Listen..."You soothed. "Josh is my best friend. You don't need me to tell you how much he loves us, both. Which is why, when some creepy old guy started hitting on me, that he did his damn fucking best to calm the situation before I started throwing fists."
