Restless, Tatsu tapped his foot in the school counselor's office, growing more uneasy with each passing minute. The counsellor was already a minute late, setting the white haired boy even more on edge as his thoughts wandered, nagging him that he was in the wrong place, what if this ends up going into the next class? His mother would kill him for missing so much in one day. What if the counselor forgot about the appointment entirely?
He turned as he heard the click of the door "sorry for keeping you waiting Mr. Noborohoshi." Relief mixed with lingering tension filled him as the counselor finally made an appearance. "No problem," Tatsu mumbled, trying to conceal the unease in his voice. The door's click marked the beginning of a conversation that could potentially end with him getting expelled.
"So, I heard you got into another fight yesterday, for a kid as introverted as you, you sure do get into a lot of fights"
The counselor's words hung in the air, and Tatsu shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He nodded hesitantly, the truth of the statement settling heavily on his shoulders. "Yeah, well, sometimes it's hard to avoid," he admitted, his gaze avoiding direct eye contact. The impending discussion felt like a tightrope walk between understanding and potential consequences.
"Do you mind telling me what the fight was about?"
Tatsu sighed, his reluctance evident. "It's just... people don't leave me alone. They push, and I react. It's like I can't escape it."
The counselor leaned forward, a sympathetic expression softening their features. "It sounds like you're dealing with a lot. Can you share more about why you feel people target you?"
The teen shrugged "not really... I'm just different I guess... easy to pick on I suppose"
. "Being different can be challenging, but it doesn't justify others mistreating you. Have you considered sharing more about your differences, maybe helping them understand you better?"
Tatsu bit his cheek, their was no way the counsellor actually thought that was a good suggestion. "Yeah... sure, that's it" Tatsu answered numbly, aware that this wasn't going to go anywhere. "Is that it? Can I go now?"
"Uh- no we still need to talk about what'll happen if you continue to get into these fights"
"Let me guess, I'll get expelled?"
The counselor noted the tension in Tatsu's response and shook their head. "Expulsion isn't the only outcome we're considering. I want to find a way to support you, not just penalize. Let's explore alternatives, work together to create a plan that helps you navigate these challenges. It's not about shutting you out; it's about finding a path forward."
"Uh huh, well it's not like I want to get into these fights"
The counselor nodded, acknowledging Tatsu's reluctance. "I understand that, Tatsu. We're here to find ways to help you navigate these situations more effectively."
"Wouldn't it make more sense for you to have meetings with the assholes that keep picking fights with me rather than telling me to 'talk it out' with them?" Tatsu's frustration boiled over, his words carrying the weight of pent-up resentment.
The counselor sighed, acknowledging the validity of Tatsu's frustration. "You have a point, Tatsu. I'll work on addressing the issue more comprehensively, involving all parties. It's not about simplifying a complex problem but finding lasting solutions. I'm here to support you, and we'll explore different approaches to make the school environment more understanding and inclusive for everyone."
