Haven Academy, Kingdom of Mistral: Battle of Haven, Nighttime.

Jaune had personally engaged against Cinder, blocking her attacks with his Shield and striking at her with Crocea Mors. After everything she had done, all the lives her selfishness had cost, he was striking with intent to kill.

There were so many people that Jaune was trying to avenge in this fight, but mainly, he was trying to avenge four people: Amber, the former and true Fall Maiden. Penny Polendina, the cheerful and friendly android girl from Atlas that Cinder and her cronies tricked Jaune's partner into accidentally killing. Roman Torchwick, the adoptive father of Jaune's girlfriend. And finally, Pyrrha Nikos. The girl who's he should've been chasing and failed to save.

Cinder had taken power that did not belong to her in the slightest, no matter what she claimed. She didn't deserve it, she didn't earn it, and one way or another, he would make sure it fell into the hands of someone far more deserving.

"You really think you can beat me, boy?" Cinder asked mockingly. "You couldn't even save your little 'Invincible Girl'."

"Shut up!" Jaune demanded. "You don't get to talk about Pyrrha, you didn't even know her!"

"You know, it's a real shame what happened," Cinder taunted, slashing at him with her scimitars. "Too bad you spent your whole school year chasing down that Schnee girl."

"Yeah, and that was my greatest fucking mistake," Jaune admitted, deflecting her blades with his Shield. "But if anyone was worthy of being the Fall Maiden instead of you, it was her!"

"Spare me your nonsense," Cinder scoffed, dodging a slash from Jaune. "She blindly charged at an opponent she had no chance against. If she were a real warrior, she would've seen that and retreated. She might've lived to fight another day. But because she wanted to fight a battle that was already lost, she stupidly cost herself her own life and left behind her first real friends."

"Pyrrha Nikos was ten times the person you will ever be!" Jaune sneered.

Jaune thrusted his sword forward, narrowly missing Cinder's face. Salvaging the attack, Jaune turned the blade so that it would cut Cinder on the cheek. Cinder felt her cheek, and upon seeing the blood, sneered.

"That was a mistake," Cinder growled.

"What, like you?" Jaune taunted with a menacing smirk.

That was the last straw for Cinder, who growled ferally. Using her fire, Cinder darted forward and grabbed Jaune before he could react. She then flew him outside of the academy and threw him to a nearby cliff.

"I was considering letting you live," Cinder growled. "I've changed my mind."

Cinder picked Jaune up by the throat, held him over the edge of the clif, dangling him there.

"Any last words, boy?" Cinder taunted, summoning one of her blades.

"You will never truly be the real Fall Maiden," Jaune grunted.

Cinder's eyes dilated in rage, finally snapping. With one swift movement, she stabbed Jaune in the abdomen. Jaune started coughing up blood, already feeling Death's cold grip nearing him. Cinder pulled her blade out of Jaune and let him drop down the cliff, but not before Jaune (in one last act of defiance) spit blood onto her face.

Cinder gave satisfied smirk, then flew back to the school. Unaware of a figure watching from the shadows.

As Jaune fell, he thought about his whole life. How he faked his transcripts in order to get into Beacon, meeting all of his friends, the times he blindly chased after Weiss's affections, when he should have been chasing after Pyrrha's affections instead, the Fall of Beacon, Pyrrha's death, finding Neo and comforting her for her loss.

Bonding with Neo over the months between the Fall and when Team RNJR set out for Haven Academy, getting to know the sadistic mute thief. Going on a few dates with her. Falling in love all over again.

Then he thought about how he would help his beloved girlfriend get her revenge on Salem's lot.

As he crashed into the water, his final thoughts were on Neo.

'Sorry, Neo,' Jaune thought to himself. 'Guess I won't be keeping my promise this time...'

As darkness began overtaking Jaune, he noticed a silhouette reaching out to him.

Void Between Universes, Dimension Outside of Time and Space.

As Jaune drifted endlessly, he passed by multiple realities. He wasn't awake for any of them, but he was surrounded by realities of how his life could have gone:

How he actually received training in one universe, how Pyrrha survived in another. One how he never encountered Neo, and another where he stood up to Cardin on Velvet's behalf back in the cafeteria.

Finally, Jaune was pulled back into his universe, but towards a different world. One that looked like Remnant, but noticeably different.

Unknown Location, Unknown Time.

Jaune slowly came to, waking up in what looked like a hospital recovery room. In the corner, a man dressed in black was reading what looked like that day's newspaper. Jaune looked down to see that his torso was wrapped with bandages.

"Ah, good," the man said. "You're finally awake."

"Where am I?" Jaune asked groggily.

"In a hospital on another world," the man replied.

"What?" Jaune asked in shock as he started regaining his senses. "Another world? Wait. Who are you?"

"My name is Monty Oum," the man replied, lowering his newspaper to reveal himself.

"Oum?" Jaune asked in shock. "As in the Father of the Brothers?"

"The very same," Oum replied, setting his newspaper aside.

"Why did you bring me to another world?" Jaune demanded, slightly angered.

"Because this world is in grave danger," Oum replied. "A creature trapped within the ice of continent called Antarctica will awaken after hundreds of thousands of years, and if it gets to the other six continents, life on this world would be assimilated by this monster within four years. It needs to be destroyed before this world suffers the same fate as many others before it."

"Wait, what are you talking about?" Jaune asked. "What monster?"

"A vile creature known only as The Thing," Oum replied gravely. "Once you find it, stop at nothing to destroy it. Once you do, I will ensure your return to Remnant."

"Why are you doing this for me?" Jaune asked skeptically.

"Because if that creature gets off this world, many other worlds will fall after this one," Oum replied seriously. "Including Remnant."

Jaune let that sink in, realizing that this monster was quite possibly an even bigger threat than even the Grimm.

"When do I start?" Jaune asked.

"As soon as the men who found you enter this room and take you to their employer," Oum replied, pointing to the door.

Jaune turned to the door, seeing the knob jiggle. He then turned back to the corner, but Oum had disappeared. The door finally opened.
