"No, Wendell," I say, turning and putting a book back onto its shelf.
"Oh come on!" he pries. "It's so boring here!"
"I thought you were the one who actually liked books," I say.
"I do! But I've read all of them here!" He flops down on the rough carpeted floor.
"Then read them again!" I say, looking at the rows of fiction books.
This time, he leans back all the way until his back hits the floor, arms and legs sprawled out, making my friend look like a weird deformed star fish with peach flesh. "You are no fun at all, my platitudinous friend."
I roll my eyes and move over to the shelf Wendell is lying in front of. I step over him and reach up to grab a book that I need. Instead, I slip, making a book from the middle of the shelf fall with me. It lands on Wendell's head.
"Ow!" he shouts. "Leah!"
"I'm sorry!" I bend at the waist and pick the book up. I brush the dust off of the cover and begin to put it back when I notice the cover.
"Leah?" Wendell asks, eying me warily. "You okay? You have this crazed look in your eyes."
"This book has the word Disney on the cover!" I whisper/yell.
"So?" Wendell asks me, boredom renewed.
"So? So?! It's Disney, Arthor!" I wave the book in his face. "You know I love Disney!"
"Yes, I know." He pushes the book down with his hand. "But there must be a bunch of books with the word Disney on the cover. Does it really mean anything?"
"I means that it's about Disney, you numbskull!" I take a long, admiring look at the navy blue cover and gold lettering. Strange. There's no author name.
"Well, that much is obvious. But it could just be a prank played by some bored library-goer seeking some sort of fun." Wendell reaches to take the book out of my hand.
"Wendell!" I actually shout as he almost takes the book. I spin around so my back is to him. Unfortunately, I was cursed with butter fingers, so I drop the book. It flaps open and lands on the ground, pages no doubt getting bent. "What the heck was that?"
"Sorry!" Wendell whispers. "But try not to notify China of my book-napping!"
"Sorry!" I bend over and scoop up the book. "Just don't take my book next time."
Wendell rolls his eyes. "You and your books."
I put my arm on his shoulder, sort of like an armrest that's right at my eye level. "Well, I haven't read all the books here, Mr. Fanboy."
"Fanboy?!" I laugh and start to walk away. "Excuse me?!"
---
I sit down on my bed, the sheets flouncing around me. I set the book down on my lap and slowly flip it open.
I smile. All the classic Disney Princess stories are in here! Even some of the newer ones!
I turn to a page about Snow White. Some picture from the movie make up the pages. Words caption the pictures with beautiful fonts and text colors.
I hear a small knock at my bedroom door. "Leah? Your friend is here."
"Which one?" I call back to my mom, even thought I know who it is.
The door slowly swings open, revealing my friend, his brown hair unruly and his glasses in perfect place on the bridge of his nose.
"Hey Wendell," I say, casting my eyes back to the book.
"'Hey Wendell'? That's all I get after you left me at the library?" He sits down next to me and slowly closes the book on my hand.
"Well, I had to get home!" I reopen the book. "I needed to read this."
The boy next to me takes the book out of my hand. He flips open the the first page of the Snow White story. "Snow White? Wow. Why did you eve--"
Before he can finish his sentence, the book page starts to glow. Wendell slams it shut and grasps his hand, a look of pain on his face.
"You okay?" I ask quickly.
"The page was burning me!" he screams.
"Okay okay!" I say, putting a hand on his shoulder. "You need to stay quiet!" He nods with understanding.
I lean over and grab the now-closed book, which Wendell had thrown on the floor. The cover looks the same. The pages don't seem to be burned.
I flip to the page Wendell was on when he got burned. What could've made this happen?
"Try saying the story name again," Wendell suggests. "But don't be touching the page!"
I lift my hands up and sigh. "Snow White."
The page begins to glow its brilliant light again. I watch in amazement as the pictures get lost in the light.
"Leah!"
Before I can hear the rest of Wendell's words, the world starts tilting and glowing brighter. I feel my eyelids grow heavy. When I can't keep them open anymore, I let them fall.
But not before I feel a warm, bony hand grasp mine.
