(The water calls to you again as you and Jack prepare yourself for new adventures)
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~~*~*~*~*~~*~~**~
That same soft brush of weightlessness whispered to you. You stared out at its endlessness. The waves stretched towards the shore, steady and inviting. But as the moon took its place confidently between the chatter of stars, you smiled at the water, a bitter sweet reminder to it that you would not set foot in its waves until the morning, as much as it called you to do so now.
Soft thuds sounded behind you, their extent muted by the sand that was beneath your own feet. "All right, love?"
That voice made you smile deeper, but you didn't take your eyes, or ears, from the water. "Of course." You said in a hush, feeling the presence of someone behind you, and soon enough, beside you. "I didn't realise how much I longed for the ocean until now." You almost waned to release a small chuckle.
Beside you, Jack too set his gaze amongst the beginning of an endless horizon. "Aye, me too. But not long now." He whispered.
"It's been over three years. I think I'll miss her though. I cannot wait until she is old enough to join us." You said.
Jack turned to look at you, placing an arm gently around your back as he did so. "And that day will arrive quicker than we can imagine."
You hummed. Katherine would be old enough one day. For now, she had only turned with the world for one year. She was not ready, not knowledgeable enough to face what the sea held and be safe. It's beauty. It's secrets.
Something ached inside of you to have wished you could raise her on the vessel you too had been raised upon. Or simply the one that you and Jack now shared, built in the three years ashore. But after years of adventure, of risk, danger and perish, you and Jack had matured to know that, as enchanting as the ocean was, what lurked below it could be evermore deadly. Neither of you would risk Katherine's safety.
"We can still take her out just beyond the shore when we come home." Jack said softly. "I want her to still taste what the world out there has to offer. Even if it cannot be limitless until she is of age." You knew that Jack had tried to manage the same fears that you had when you discovered you were pregnant. You had both had your days at sea: battles, voyages, gold. Yet, you had both lost so much. You had gained such confidence and power and Jack had gained such maturity and morality since you had both first met mid battle, when your crews fought against the English threat. Somehow, this growth had made something else flourish for you both too. And now, you would protect the product of that love you both held.
You smiled, turning to him. "We agreed that after three years, Katherine would stay with my Father, once his days at sea were too done. And we would venture out into the ocean, once again, to see how it had changed, to truly explore a new world after so long-"
"To make sure it is as safe for Katherine as it can be." Jack finished. "Or at least, as safe as we can make it. The world has changed, time has changed," he breathed "fleeting."
"Aye." You breathed. Looking out to the sea once more, you straightened, Jack's hand still on your back. "So," you began "we do so. We see what awaits us after our time gone. Adventure once more. And then, a new beginning, for all three of us."
You turned to look at Jack. He smiled too. "Aye, love. Aye."
