We broke down on the side of the road. The sun was going to set soon and we were in the middle of nowhere. All of us were hanging around outside the stuffy van, as Leland checked the tire. It was completely torn and flat.
Leland yelled out profanities and kicked the van. I was leaned up against the van as I checked out the surroundings ahead of me. Julie and Connie talked quietly as Sonny helped Leland. I felt something brush against my arm. It was Ana, as she rested her head on my shoulder. She was two inches shorter than me.
"What are we going to do now, Maria is somewhere out there."
We were interrupted by Sonny and Leland as they made their way towards us.
"Leland suggested we all continue on foot. There could be help nearby." Sonny said.
Groans of protest were heard amongst the group, but we all decided to continue down the road. It was so hot outside. The air was muggy and as the sun beat down on us. About a mile up the road we came across a gas station.
The gas station was small and rusty looking. It actually seemed like it hasn't been a customer in years. The lettering on the gas prices were washed out and unreadable. The gas pumps were dirty and greasy. The only thing giving this place life was the sign against the window that read "OPEN" in big red letters.
As we stepped foot into the doors of the station, a little jingle could be heard throughout the store. The fan in the corner creaked awkwardly as it blew cool air. An old man then hobbled out of what seemed to be some kind of office. He looked like the typical grumpy elder.
"What brings you folks out here?" He questioned the young adults.
I sat back and watched as Leland explained to the old man how our van broke down. I glanced at the selves and all the small trinkets. Julie and Connie stood with me while Sonny and Ana stayed with my brother.
"Hey, this is pretty." Connie said as her fingers brushed the flowery keychain.
As we were focused on the souvenirs, I heard the door jingle as someone else walked in. I glanced over and made eye contact with a tall man. His dark hair was slicked back. He had a bit of a tan, and he had almond shaped eyes. He wore a black shirt with cut out sleeves and blue jeans.
Julie nudged me, breaking my eye contact with him. I felt my face flush red when Julie smirked teasingly.
"Just in time, boy, these folks need a new tire for their van. Go find them a spare!" The old man said rudely.
"Alright, Pa." His accent is thick and attractively husky. He gave the man an annoyed look.
I watched as my brother shook his hand as well as the old man's. They continued talking while I kept my distance. The other two joined the rest as I stuck by the shelf of souvenirs. I wasn't much of a people person.
Not long after I felt a presence next to me.
"See anything you like?" The attractive man stood next to me, his eyes watching me curiously. "The name's Johnny." He held his hand out.
"Oh, hey. I'm Y/n, Leland's sister." I nervously said and stuck my hand out.
Johnny chuckled and took my hand and shook it. He grinned and shook his head amused.
"Nice to meet you. Not many pretty girls like you 'round here."
He was flirting with me, wasn't he. I felt ashamed since I am dating Evan. Johnny is very attractive; however, I can't help but feel attracted to him.
"Ah, thank you." I began to feel awkward. That was until Johnny placed a keychain in my hand with a smile. It was an interesting shape. I can't quite describe it. However, there was a beautiful yellow gem in the middle.
"Keep it, it's free. Matches your outfit." He said as he went back to the others. I soon joined them.
"Hey, listen. It's getting pretty dark out. This area can be a bit unpredictable at night." The old man said. "You all are welcome to stay for the night. The house is big enough."
We all glanced at one another while the old man and Johnny watched, waiting for an answer. Leland spoke up, accepting the offer.
