The city is a busy place. Lots of people zooming about, cars flying down the roads until met with the traffic. The bus brought us right outside the museum so we wouldn't have to walk far. Everyone filed off the bus and grouped together outside of the museum doors. The teacher did a head count and started going over the rules.
"Everyone has to use the buddy system, I don't care how old you guys are. Don't go far and don't leave the building. I expect everyone to be back here at 9 p.m. on the dot. Not a minute later because it is a far drive back, "the teacher rambles, "everything you need is in this building which is why no one is leaving. If I notice that people are getting bored, maybe I can schedule a stop before we go home at 9 if time permits."
The students start heading inside with the teacher and our group follows when Quinn stops us in our tracks.
"Can we go to a pharmacy or something? My head really hurts and I can't tough it out anymore," Quinn whines.
"Usually I carry ibuprofen in my tote bag, but it seems I forgot to refill it before we left. I'm sorry," Autumn says.
"Yeah so can we take a little detour to find something for my head? I'd really appreciate it," he moans.
"But the teacher says we can't leave the building. I don't really want to get in trouble," Thomas replies.
"The teacher won't even know we're gone, and technically, we aren't leaving the building if we never entered. Count me in," Jarret declares confidently.
"That isn't how it works but okay," I roll my eyes towards him, "I will go too."
"Yeah, let's just go. We have nothing to lose really as long as we get back on time," Cami inputs.
I look at the rest of the group to see what they'd say. Lincoln wasn't really paying attention, Thomas is looking pretty anxious, and Autumn looks severely disappointed.
"Yeah, sure, whatever. We can go," Lincoln finally says after watching some pedestrians in the distance.
Our group descends down the street to find the nearest shop that sells painkillers for Quinn. Thomas and Autumn both don't say a word as we head farther and farther away from the museum. I see Autumn looking back longingly every few seconds. Thomas is just walking with his head down.
We finally find a store for Quinn to buy his painkillers and we grab a few snacks as well. We walk out of the store eating our snacks we bought when Lincoln points down the road.
"Yooo sick, an arcade. We should all go and play a few rounds of some games. I bet I can get a better score than you in PacMan, Jarret," he taunts.
"There is no way. I am way better than you at PacMan. Let's go," Jarret replied, waving us towards the arcade.
"I bet I can beat both of you in every game there," Quinn teases.
"I only like Skeeball. I used to play it over and over again when my family took us to arcades," Cami inputs.
The seven of us head over to the arcade so the boys can settle their bets and for Cami to play her Skeeball. We push open the doors to the arcade and notice it is very empty. It is a very retro arcade packed full of old school games like Donkey Kong, PacMan, Dig Dug, Mortal Kombat II, and Pong. The floors have a funky, colorful pattern, the walls are an ugly shade of pink with weird posters all over the place. The lighting was very dim, and there was a musty smell wafting in the air.
"Where is Skeeball?!" Cami cries. She seems genuinely distressed about it not being here.
"Sucks to be you. At least we can have our PacMan tournament," Jarret says as he approaches the game.
The three boys start up their game and crowd around the screen. Thomas and Autumn I notice take off to the back somewhere, chit chatting away about something. Cami and I find some games to play to kill some time too.
"I like how it is only a quarter to play these games. I'm surprised it is not as busy of a place because of that," she says to me.
"I was just thinking that. I thought it was really odd how cheap it is here."
We continue to play around at all the different games in the arcade while the boys keep their PacMan game going. Their shouts fill the eerie silence of the nearly forgotten arcade. Then, we hear Thomas and Autumn call to us from the back.
"Guys, you might want to come look at this," They yell.
We all put up our games and head towards them at the back of the arcade.
