-HER-
Celsa narrowed her eyes at me and asked, "How did you know?"
"I can see," I shrugged. Every priestess had some basic psychic abilities that allowed one to see such things, but of course, I wouldn't explain this to her.
"You're trying to provoke me," she accused, "And the Royal Seer has prophesied that I'll bear a boy, the future king of this land," She spoke with pride, rubbing her belly fiercely. "And the Royal Seer is always right," She spat.
I whistled and looked at her bump again. I could see that it was a girl. There was no doubt in that. It was as clear as the day. She glared at me meanwhile.
"Then they're about to get humbled soon," I chuckled and left before she could utter another word. I didn't leave my suite after that. I spent my time anxiously thinking about Vittoria would react to my letter.
She was very unpredictable. So, I was in a twist, and it was starting to eat me away. I wish I could go to the shrine and see her somehow, but I knew that wouldn't be possible now. I groaned in frustration, feeling stuck in this place.
Feeling stuck.... It had been a constant feeling for most of my life now. It wasn't just feeling suck in a place but also in time. I thought about it for a while, dozing off slowly.
I woke up to the sound of my suite door opening. I heard the servant talk to someone, followed by the footsteps towards my bedroom. Heavy footsteps.
Soon the door opened, and Alex walked in. His eyes lit up as soon as he saw me. Possessiveness blazed in his eyes as he stalked towards me. My stomach dipped, and my heart raced to see him.
"Did I disturb you?" He asked, sitting beside me on the bed and gently running the back of his fingers against my cheekbone. Instantly, I felt those intense sparks dancing on my skin and running down my neck, sending waves of pleasure.
I swallowed, craving more of them. I noticed how his eyes darkened almost immediately, focusing on my lips.
"No," I answered, leaning against the headboard. He gave me a dark look and nodded. There was something off about him. His body looked slightly tensed, and some circles were starting to form under his eyes. He looked tired. He must have had a lot to deal with after what happened at the court.
"What is it?" I asked him, sensing the tension in the air. He moved closer to me, taking my hands in his. I ignored the butterflies in my stomach and the itch to wrap my arms around him and kiss his breath away.
"There's trouble in my kingdom, and I have to leave to deal with it personally," He told me. My eyebrows shot to my hairline, and suddenly, I felt my heart drop.
"When will you be back?" I couldn't help but ask. Being here without him would feel more frustrating and suffocating. He was my only breath of fresh air here. He gave me something to look forward to, and I'd hate to live without it. I felt a stab of pain in my chest while thinking about it.
"A month," His answer worsened my chest's pain. I sucked in the air and looked at him, digging my fingers into his flesh. His gaze remained steady on my face, taking me in. "I'm thinking of taking you with me," He announced. Instantly, I felt relief, but the look on his face intensified.
"I don't want to, but I know it would be hard for you to be here without me," He stated, reading my mind. "But it's going to be dangerous. We'll be travelling through the Dead Dessert,"
"I hope there's some sightseeing on the way," I smiled, not hating the idea too much. Oddly, I was looking forward to it. Maybe, it was because I'd be able to escape this place where it felt like everyone was watching my every move and analysing it to the atomic detail.
"You haven't seen sand storms or sandworms, have you?" He asked, not sharing my enthusiasm.
"What are sandworms?" I asked, intrigued. His face hardened. "Are they like earthworms?"
"Worse,"
"At least they don't suck blood. Do they?" I asked. Finally, his lips twitched a little.
"No. They eat people whole," He told me, making my eyes widen.
"H-how big are they exactly?" I couldn't help but ask. However, I had a feeling that I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight if I got the answer.
"They can be as big as a Kraken," He answered. I swallowed hard, trying to picture the monster. A shiver ran down my spine.
"Why are we travelling through the desert again?" I asked. He sighed deeply.
"There are some issues with one of my warrior tribes, and I need to set it right before the war. Otherwise, I might have issues getting good warriors," He answered. "It's unavoidable. Again, you don't have to come if you—"
"I'm going with you," I pressed sternly. He cocked an eyebrow at me, and his eyes darkened more.
"Are you sure?" He asked.
"I'm here because of you. I go where you go," I told him, and instantly, his eyes blazed with possessiveness. He closed the remaining distance between us and wrapped his arms around me. Our lips almost brushed while I straddled him.
"I don't want to leave you, but I am in a twist. It's dangerous out there, but I know leaving you here isn't good for you. It will take a long time for my people to get used to you," He spoke.
"Sandworms or not, I'm going with you, Alex," I told him firmly, even though my voice was a mere whisper now. I held his face in my hands and looked deep into his eyes. It was still hard for me to believe that I had agreed to be with him, but nonetheless, a part of me was looking forward to being with him. I had suppressed that part for a long time, and it was taking over me. Consume me.
"I'll protect you no matter what," He assured me, pressing his forehead against mine.
"I know," I whispered and felt his arms tighten around me.
"Theresa..." He groaned, pressing his lips dangerously close to mine, "I want you. I'm sorry we have to do this. I wish we could spend some time together without things like these getting in the way," He sounded frustrated and disappointed, as if he was letting me down.
"It doesn't matter," I told him, stroking his cheek. "I'm looking forward to it. I don't like it here," I told him honestly. "When are we leaving?"
"Tomorrow,"
