Steve's always felt a strong sense of déjà vu in almost everything he does. Whether it be pouring cereal in a bowl for breakfast or climbing behind the steering wheel of a car for the first time, it always feels like he's done it hundreds of times before. That's not to say that it totally rules over his life, he doesn't ever put too much thought into it but it's constantly there and just a tad bit bothersome.
So, when Steve walks into the lunch room on the first day in his sophomore year of high school, he sits down at a table with his friends and doesn't give a second glance to the new kid sitting next to him. That is until his best friend, Sam Wilson, speaks up.
"Steve, this is James." He gestures to the boy. "I met him at that camp my parents made me go to over the summer." Steve grins at James and holds out his hand. "Great to meet you James."
Their hands meet and suddenly, there is a war going on in Steve's head.
An actual, proper war. World War II to be exact. But, amidst the gunshots and the yelling and screaming, he sees himself. A sickly kid living in a one bedroom apartment with his mother. His mother dying, that same sickly kid moving in with his best friend as they both grow up and struggle to keep food on the table.
He sees himself falling in love with this boy, sees the boy, now a man, getting drafted in the same godforsaken war that continues on as the background to his vision. That's when he's thrown into a lab, he's put inside a machine and comes out huge. No longer the child he used to be. He's punching someone, wait hang on, he's literally punching Hitler. And now he's rescuing that man he'd fallen for all those years before, not once but twice, from a man with no face.
"Go, get out of here!"
"Not without you!"
And the man is falling and the grief is horrible and Steve thinks maybe this is what dying feels like.
Then Steve is on a plane, he's talking to a girl as he sends the plane plummeting into ice, and he wakes up, but not really, and everything is different. The war is over and everything has changed, everything but him and there's something missing that he can't quite put his finger on.
That is, until there's a flash of metal and bright red and that man is back and he doesn't know what to feel because he knows that man. He fell in love with that man but he doesn't remember him and it almost feels worse than when he lost him in the first place.
And then they're fighting. Steve tries at first, of course, but soon enough he's giving up because he can't fight his best friend, and he's falling into a body of water again and everything stops. His vision clears and James is yanking his hand back and Steve doesn't know what to do or say. Everyone's staring with varying degrees of concern but Steve can't drag his eyes away from James when finally it comes to him. A name, no, not just a name. The most important name he'll ever hear because they are soulmates. He's absolutely sure of it.
"Bucky." He finally breathes.
Bucky's arms are thrown around him and there's tears because the life he remembers is both the same and completely different and he's missed this stupid boy for more than a lifetime.
