Rick and Lori Grimes were reluctant to allow their teenage daughter to go on a trip alone with her boyfriend, as any parents would be. After a lot of convincing and promising that she would call home every day, they finally agreed.Colette thought a lot about what would've happened if instead they'd said no. She wouldn't have to wonder if her family was alive or if they'd been torn apart by the dead. She wouldn't have to wonder if her dad even made it through surgery. The last time she'd heard from her mom, it had been to inform her that her dad had been shot on duty.
The phone call had cut off abruptly, and the last words she'd heard from her mom were 'I love you, be safe Letty.' Lori had told her not to turn around and come home, they were almost to Virginia. She had promised to call when her dad got out of surgery. She never called.
Within the next hour, every radio station was saying that people were coming back to life and eating other people, that the dead were living again. Needless to say, Colette and Kayden made it their mission to get to Virginia as soon as possible.

Colette picked relentlessly at her fingernails as she sat on the curb of a random street. Kayden's truck had run out of gas a day ago in the middle of nowhere, leaving them no choice but to walk.
Footsteps approached from her left, Colette didn't have to look up to know who it was. "Hey, I found some canned beans under one of the shelves." Kayden plopped down next to her on the pavement, crossing his legs.
Colette sighed softly, "That's good, we can add it to our stash." She continued to pick at her nails. She wondered what Carl was doing right now and if he was safe or even alive.
Kayden reached over and took her hand, stopping her from destroying her nails. A nervous habit she's had since she was little. One hand continued to hold both of hers while the other reached out and softly grasped her jaw, lifting her chin up.
His green eyes met her soft brown ones. "It's gonna be okay, we're gonna make it through this. Together." His words of reassurance echoed in her head. It's gonna be okay. She nodded and leaned over to rest her head on his shoulder.
They sat there for a minute before setting off down the road again.

The two teenager's hands were intertwined as they walked cautiously through the subdivision. Kayden gripped his pocket knife tightly, prepared if any of the dead came at them. His voice trembled a little as he spoke, "We're almost there, it's just ahead." Colette nodded and held his hand a little tighter.
They had no idea if Camden was even here anymore, let alone still alive. The subdivision looked ransacked, garage doors left open, windows broken, and blood was splattered across one of the driveways.
Walking up the inclined pavement that was his brother's house, Kayden hesitated. Colette halted and glanced at her boyfriend, "It's okay. If he's not here then we'll just keep looking." Kayden nodded and they continued toward the front door.
Colette stood behind him as he turned the handle on the front door, to their surprise it was unlocked and opened with ease. The pair stepped into the house quietly, shutting the door behind them.
They crept through the empty living room and into the kitchen, finding it empty as well. Unexpectedly a thud came from upstairs. They weren't alone.
Stepping through the living room again they reached the stairs, Kayden held a finger to his lips signalling for Colette to stay quiet.
The steps squeaked as they moved upstairs. Only the faint sound of their breathing could be heard.
Another thud came from down the hall. A groan shortly after.
Kayden released her hand and shot down the hallway. He pushed open the bedroom door hoping to find his brother.
Instead, he found half a corpse clawing at the closet door.
Colette stood in the doorway as Kayden approached the biter. They'd encountered a couple in the past day, the first one had caught them off guard but Kayden quickly discovered that only a blade to the brain kills them for good.
He swiftly stuck his knife into the side of the biter's head, it fell to the ground and blood poured out from its skull.
Colette watched sadly as Kayden's shoulders began to tremble, she didn't hesitate to walk over and pull him into her embrace.
His breath tickled her neck as he spoke, "It's not him. It's Cam's dad." Colette sighed. If his dad was here but dead, what did that mean for Camden? "I'm sorry, babe." She rubbed his back as he continued to cry into her sweater.
Suddenly a voice hissed in pain from inside the closet. The couple jumped in surprise and Kayden pushed her behind him. He held his pocket knife out in front of him as he yelled, "Come out from there! Right now!"
Colette watched, her body rigid, as the handle turned slowly and the door cracked open.
A small pair of hands emerged from the opening. They were bloodied and shook relentlessly.
Kayden reached out and took hold of the door, swinging it open to reveal the person.
It was a boy. Colette immediately recognized him from all the pictures she'd been shown. She let out a breath of relief and Kayden's knife slipped from his grasp, falling to the ground.
The next thing she knew, two bodies collided in a tight embrace. They sobbed as they held each other, the younger of the two tucked into the eldest's chest. The brothers were reunited.
Colette grinned tearfully. Camden was alive, he was okay.
