After I made it home from the gym, I showered and called Alicia to let her know I was on my way. As I drove, I kept replaying that strange encounter from earlier. The girl at the gym—her face didn't ring a single bell. I hadn't had any beef with anyone, and I definitely wasn't entertaining anybody's man. I'd been minding my business, enjoying the peace that came with being single. Love wasn't even on my radar, and I wasn't budging on that. I made a mental note to tell Alicia everything that happened later tonight.
I finally arrived at the store and met up with Alicia. We were short on time since we both got caught up in traffic.
Me: "So what vibe are you going for?"
Alicia: "I don't know... maybe a cute two-piece set with big accessories and some bold shoes."
Me: "That could be cute. Ughhh, do I really have to go? I just wanna stay home. You know I don't like crowds."
Alicia: "Nope, I don't wanna hear it. Ever since that last relationship, you've been acting like a hermit. You can still go out and enjoy yourself."
Me: "But—"
Alicia: "No excuses. I didn't say you had to fall in love, just come out and have a good time."
I huffed dramatically, dragging my feet as I flipped through the dress rack. That's when I saw it—a dress that felt just right for the occasion. I already knew my size in that store, so I grabbed it and picked out some accessories. Alicia did the same.
Me: "Fine. But after this, don't ask me to go to any more parties. People don't know how to act these days."
Alicia: "Girl, this isn't even that kind of party. Just wait—you'll see."
Me: "Mmmhmm. Whatever you say, bestie."
We checked out and hurried back outside. The sun had already started setting, and we still had traffic to deal with. Originally, we were going to ride together, but Alicia had plans with her man after the party. I didn't mind; I already had a mental note to leave early. I was only going because she begged me—she didn't say how long I had to stay. She'd forgive me later. 😂
Back at home, I started getting ready. Even though I wasn't feeling a party, I still took my time. My wax appointment was two days ago, so check. I showered, then sat at my vanity to do my makeup. I always kept it light. I liked looking like myself—and I loved my freckles.
I started with a small amount of primer, blending it across my face. Then came my MAC foundation—just five or six dots to keep it simple. MAC was the only brand that didn't break me out. I applied a touch of concealer and highlighter, filled in my brows, and skipped lashes because mine were already done. A brown lip liner and clear gloss finished the look.
Next, I slipped into a burnt orange bodycon dress. It was plain but perfect. That color against my skin? A win every time. I added gold hoops, a gold necklace, and my Coach watch with the tan leather strap. Then I stepped into my clear heels and grabbed my clear clutch.
I kept my hair simple. My natural locks were braided a few days ago, so now they had a nice wave to them. I created a deep side part, swept everything to the left, and pinned it in place. They hit right at my bra strap—just the right length. After one last check in the mirror, I gave myself a smirk.
"You go, girl."

Alicia pulled up right on time. I was still mentally protesting, but I had to admit—getting out of the house felt... needed.
I stepped outside.
Alicia: "Oooooooh, hot mama!"
I turned around and gave her a look.
