~karl pov~

me and my friend sapnap were walking from school to our homes it was a rainy day today and me and sapnap were sharing an umbrella, sapnap would occasionally remove the umbrella from my hea just to tease me, since he was taller he would always hold the umbrella it was like his duty to protect me from the rain like a parents protects their child from any harm from the world.... or at least what most parents do ,

as i was zoning out i suddently feel water on my head "sapnap" i yell annoyed thinking this was one of his "pranks" but i turn and i dont see him anywhere, i look around worried and i see him kneeled down next to a box near the trashcan, i run to him and get under the umbrella

i look into the box and i see a baby cat probaly a few weeks old meowing like crazy and shivering. Me and sapnap look at eachothers eyes and he immidiately removes his coat and puts in his knees picking up the kitten and wrapping it in the coat, we both get up and he hands me the kitten "you hold her ill hold the umbrella " he said , i just nodded.

we lived close to eachother, like a 2 minute walk or something maybe 3 or 4 i dont remember, i have actually never counted, i thought to myself , need to count what if something happens and i dont know how many minutes my only friend lives i was thinking as we were walking . We suddendly stopped and sapnap turned at me "were at your house u wanna go in" he asked me "can i come over please" i replied , he just nodded

we left my house and i started counting , 1 minute passed and we walked by stacys house , the girl that liked sapnap i hated her so much sapnap was mine and only mine, i thought

2 minutes

3 minutes and we made it to his house , i chuckled to myself now knowing that he lived 3 minutes away from me , man we have know eachother since babies and i just figure that out, anyways

he opened the door and we got in , we removed our shoes and coats and i saw him place down the umbrella ,i thought to myself now that we are home he puts down the umbrella because he knows i feel sfe and i dont need protection now

we walk up to his room with the kitten in my arm still shivering , we sit in his bed , i to the left and him in the right i guess he likes the right side more or maybe i am talking the left and he actually wanna sit here but- i felt his fingers snap infront of my face, god i was zoning out again thats embarassing

~time skip~

we took the kitten to the vet the same day and she told us that the poor baby was extremely malonourished and needed a lot of care and attention and care and warmth and ...protection?

how am i supposed to protect a cat when i cant even protect mysel i cant protect anything i was never taugh how to , i was never protected i was always in danger growing up i cant protect shit

i started panicking and breathing harded, sapnap noticed and put his hand in my chest motioning me to take deep breaths to try and calm down. After some time i was calm but the word protection was lingering in my mind like crazy it was all i could think about , every time i blinked i could see the word slowly form infront of me , and when i opened them it was.. gone
