BEEP BEEP BEEP

Fiona stirred awake, moving around in her bed uncomfortably before she let out a loud groan. Opening her eyes, filled with eye boogers, she slammed her hand into the obnoxiously loud alarm clock. The shattering noise made Fiona turn her head to see the clock on the floor, its time facing downward.

She shook her head and lay back down, her eyelids drooping shut once more. Moments later, her eyes snapped open. The temptation to fall back asleep echoed in her thoughts, yet the importance of her week-long vacation to visit her parents bugged her, along with the need to make breakfast for the little demons she looked after.

Squinting against the morning light beaming through her curtains, Fiona sat up and peeled the blankets from her body. She swung her legs out, her bare feet meeting the chill of the wooden floor. Picking up the alarm clock, she put in the batteries that had tumbled out and turned it to face her. 7:32 AM. With a sigh, she placed the clock back on the nightstand, rose, and stretched. Turning to consider making her bed, she noticed a drool stain on her pillow, which caused her to wipe her mouth and furrow her brows in disgust.

Deciding not to make her bed, Fiona chose an outfit suitable for the long 7-hour drive ahead. She pulled out a blue t-shirt, marked by a pizza grease stain, and paired it with grey sweatpants. To complete the look, she slipped into the Converse that her sister, Mariam, had got her for Christmas.

Walking into the kitchen, Fiona opened the fridge to grab eggs and bacon. She then moved to the pantry for some bread. Cooking was never her favorite, yet she had learned to tolerate it, a skill perfected out of essentials while caring for her siblings. Their parents didn't care for them anymore so Fiona was confused about why they called for them to visit. She was also confused about why she was going, letting her siblings see the people who left them at a young age. Her mother had left, her father remarried, and had another daughter, Fiona's age— a half-sister she couldn't bring herself to like.

"Mornin'." Fiona turned towards Mariam, whose voice rang in her ears. Carrying her school bag, Mariam walked towards the dining table, set her bag down, and began to pull out the homework she had forgotten to finish.

"Morning. Where's Gia?" Fiona questions, her eyes drifting to her sister as she washed her hands. Then, she began to rub the eye boogers from her eyes.

"Set her alarm for 7:59, says she can get ready fast. And that the ping-pong match stressed her out," Mariam replied, shaking her head in disbelief. "Can't believe they broke the three-year winning streak."

Fiona scoffed and laid out the ingredients for French toast on the counter before she began to cook. Pausing, she strolled over to the CD player and played 'Don't Mess Around With Jim.' Then, she fired up the stove, tore open the bacon packages, and placed the slices in the pan.
