Months Later
Preston POV:
As I reclined on my bunk, poring over literary works, my mind delved into the intricate schemes that would pave my path to Corso's realm. The man commanded his own clandestine gang within these walls, effortlessly manipulating the strings of power like a true boss. The pervasive corruption became increasingly evident with every passing moment.
Fortunately, Luca would ensure that I remained privy to updates concerning River's well-being. She, bearing the precious fruit of our forbidden love, grew within her a life that was undeniably mine. With every exhale, wisps of smoke escaped from my concealed contraband stash.
"Look at you," the gravelly voice of my cellmate, T-Bone, slithered through the air, accompanied by a lascivious lick of his lips. I swiftly closed my book, rising from my resting place. "I've warned you before, you don't want to test me," I growled.
T-Bone's hand descended upon my shoulder, his touch oozing with menace. "Don't tempt me, kid. I could make it quick," he sneered.
A malicious grin spread across my face, revealing a glimpse of my true nature. "Don't say I didn't give you fair warning," I hissed. With lightning speed, I seized his left hand, effortlessly snapping his wrist bone. Gripping the back of his head, I forcefully introduced it to the unforgiving wall. "Listen, you insignificant worm, I'm not one to hesitate when it comes to taking a life."
A swift, calculated knee strike found its mark, shattering T-Bone's nose, leaving him sprawled on the floor, a pitiful heap of broken bones and shattered pride. I sauntered out, making my way to the yard, my domain. As I surveyed the multitude of faces, my gaze fixated upon Emilio.
Emilio, with his salt-and-pepper hair and weathered countenance, stood as a testament to the toll this place had taken on him. His jumpsuit, unkempt and stained, mirrored the depths of his moral decay during his time behind these unforgiving walls. Surrounded by his fiercely devoted gang, loyalty etched into every fibber of their being, Emilio exuded an aura of power that demanded respect.
For now, I would bide my time, patiently awaiting the moment when I could earn his trust. Once that trust was secured, I would swiftly extinguish his life, eliminating any threat he posed. But before that, a phone call beckoned my attention. With deliberate movements, I dialled the number, yearning to hear the soothing timbre of River's voice. The tone rang out, stretching a few agonizing seconds in anticipation.
"Hello," River's voice flowed through the phone, a sweet melody that instantly brought a smile to my face.
"Hey, it's such a relief to hear your voice," I replied, my heart swelling with affection. I turned around, keenly aware of my surroundings in the yard, ensuring no one could catch me off guard.
"Baby, how are you holding up? Are they treating you well?" Her voice brimmed with concern, resonating deep within me.
I chuckled softly, a mixture of reassurance and determination in my tone. "I'm holding my ground, love. Nothing I haven't endured before."
River took a deep breath, exhaling softly. "Preston, the baby... she's kicking," she shared, a hint of laughter colouring her words. "I think she knows it's you on the other end of the line."
My grip on the receiver tightened, a surge of emotion coursing through me. "He or she will become the guiding light of my life," I declared, a touch of pride in my voice.
"Even more than me?" River teased playfully, her laughter dancing through the phone.
"Both of you will forever be my top priority," I affirmed, my smile widening. "I have to go, baby. I love you."
