Sweat trickled down the sides of my face, due to the glaring sun. The aphsalt felt great under my nike's, as I started dribbling, moving closer and closer to the net. Suddenly I sprang up and my body shifted into the now-familiar yet perfect, textbook dunking position. As the basketball sank into the net, I felt a wave of accomplishment wash over me. Wasting no time, I lined up to shoot another one, when my dad's soft voice suddenly filled the air.
"Brooke come eat, lunch is ready." I froze, if my dad had made lunch then there was sure to be a mystery waiting for me at the dining room. Warily, I trudged back inside. The first thing that hit me was the smell of burnt food. I inwardly groaned, anticipating disaster, but then my eyes fell on the dining table and my mouth dropped open.
There lying on the table was steaming Chinese fried rice. I glanced at my dad, he had a huge 7-year-old goofy grin, the bastard. I sniffed the air once more for reassurance, yup something had definitely been burning. My eyes narrowed suspiciously at my father. He began to squirm under my scrutiny. God, he was so shy. Sniffing, I padded toward the kitchen. Once I entered, there was no way I could miss the totally burnt pasta remains, drenched from the water he had no doubt used to put out the fire.Smacking my palm to my forehead I turned around and exclaimed, "Really dad, I'm astonished, how can you burn something that bad?" I stared at the charred remnants, what was he going to do once I was old enough to move out... Initially, I had meant my tone to be a joking one, but I guess I came out to harsh, because when I looked at my dad he actually seemed sad. Dang, was I really that intimidating? Well he has been really sensitive, ever since mom died... Time for a chance in thought. My face broke into a huge 7-year-old grin that I know is identical to my dad's. I plopped myself down on the chair, and started stuffing myself. Then we both broke into laughter at the same time.
