I was on my way to the Hailey's where I worked as a part time launderer. They were a rich family in Northcrest Heights and they paid me well every week to come and do their laundry twice a week. Wednesday's and Thursday's.
"Hello Mrs Hailey " I said greeting my boss.
"Hello darling, how are you? "
"Im fine, I uhh- finally got me and my sisters a place. It's in the same area as our old place."
"Well thats good. I honestly wish you well and I know you will take great care of your sisters. "
"Yes ma'am. Thank you, and I also wanted to ask, would it be possible to pick up some more hours?"
"Well sweetie, we honestly have workers for everything, sometimes I feel as if we're overstaffed. Running the business causes us to need you all though. "
"Yes ma'am. I understand, thank you anyways. "
I turned to leave the room and begin my work when Mrs. Hailey called me.
"Oh! Yasmine, I just remembered something.! The Wrights from down the block have a new business. Mrs. Wright just recently opened a salon and I remembered her saying she needed help. You do your own hair right? "
"Yes ma'am, but I--"
"Good she needs someone to assist her with clients and the shop"
I thought to myself how people alwayd complemented me on my hair. I had to admit, I did a nice job when I could.
"Ok well Id be glad to help " I replied remembering I needed as much money as possible.
"Ill give her a call. "
"Thank you."
I went and started on the laundry and within three hours I had washed, dried, and folded half the family's clothes. I would come back tomorrow and do the ironing and hanging.
Tae came and picked me up at about 5:30. The girls were already at the house because he had more "business" to take care of.
"Hey baby, how was your day?" he asked.
"It was good. I got alot done, it wont be so heavy tomorrow. "
"Well thats wassup. How about we have chicken tonight. Im starving.?" I agreed I hadnt ate since this morning and that was a bowl of cereal.
"Ok cool. "
We swung by a chicken place before heading home and grabbed two big buckets of chicken with 12 biscuits and a side of macaroni and coleslaw.
We got to the house and I went inside and remembered the box from lastnight. I was still astonished from what was inside. He had given me a promise ring, that to me, seemed like a wedding ring. It had a huge diamond sitting on it. I couldn't believe my eyes.
I went to pick it up, when I felt something thick under the box. It felt like it was covered in tape. I lifted the box up and saw something thick and protruding out from the box. It was taped down with red duck tape. I started unraveling the tape and it became bigger and bulkier. I screamed when I saw what fell from under it.
"Whats the matter baby?" Tae said as he came rushing in the room.
I couldn't even get words out.
"U-un-under the box!" I stuttered out. He began to laugh.
I was confused. Why was he laughing? Why was there ten grand under that box? Did he steal it?
"What, you dont want it? "
