Zoya was texting Shan in the corner while Julien and her friends were having fun in the small-town dive bar. Zoya looked completely uninterested and annoyed that she was here with her sister and friends, but that was not quite the case.
Shan: Just ditch them; again, I don't know why you are there. Julien is not even paying attention to you from what you are telling me.
Zoya: I am here to support my sister and there is also one thing that I wanted to do while I was here.
She never told Shan the truth behind her intentions of spending New Year's with Julien and her friends.
Shan: oh right your secret mission. It better be worth being in the middle of nowhere and not spending time with your remarkable best friend.
Zoya: I think it will be
Zoya puts her phone away, and as time passes, she stays alone in the corner of the bar, focusing directly on Monet de Haan. The secret mission she didn't want to tell Shan was to confess to Monet her true feelings for her.
Zoya finally admitted it to herself after the Obie and Julien Thanksgiving debacle. Telling herself that she was in love with Obie and being insistent on having sex that Thanksgiving weekend with him was only to get rid of thoughts of the girl who never did anything to earn Zoya's feelings for her. However, when the truth came out that Obie and Julien were still sleeping together, she took it as a sign to be honest with herself and accept her feelings.
This was the time, the place, and this might be the only chance she would get to tell her how she felt.
Sitting there, Zoya is trying to figure out how to approach Monet and tell her how she feels without making her do her infamous eye roll, which, oddly enough, Zoya finds adorable.
She loses her thoughts when she hears Obie's girlfriend, Grace, trying to sing while standing on the pool table. She looks at Monet, who is filming Grace, laughing at her belligerence. This reminds her of her birthday and how Monet laughed at her humiliation in that video of Zoya's past. "How could I fall for someone like this?" she asks herself.
As everyone helps Grace down and takes her to the car, Zoya stands in front of Monet to confront her.

"What is wrong with you?"
Monet continues to look down at her phone, uninterested in what Zoya has to say.
"What the hell is wrong with you, Monet?" With more anger, enough to get Monet's attention.
Monet looks at Zoya, confused. "What? It's not my fault she is a lightweight. I thought hillbillies could handle way more?" she shrugs.
