Once I got to the correct painting, I quickly pushed it open and climbed in. I expected Astraea to be greeting me, but instead, I find a transparent figure. A ghost. I looked on in wonder. It was not every day you see a ghost. The ghost was a beautiful girl. She looked no older than 17. I wondered how she died. In her hand was many potions and prophecy books. Then a realization hit me. She was a former enchantress! Then, my brain started whirling. Wait. If she was a ghost and former enchantress, that must mean that she got killed somehow! Enchantresses can't die if they don't do anything. Wait! Then who killed her? Just then, Astraea popped out from behind a curtain and screamed: "Boo!" In her hands, she held an hourglass made of tree roots and bark powder. She held it over her, me, and the ghost's heads and then everything stopped.
Literally. She had stopped time. The distant chatter in the ballroom stopped and everything went silent. "Dang. I thought you would be scared." Astraea whined.
"Scared of what?" I arched my elbrow.
"Oh you know, me popping out and Azira being a ghost." She nodded solemnly.
"Wow. Azira is a nice name." I smiled kindly at the ghost. "What brings you here?"
"I cameeee toooo brrringgg a meessssage tooooo Celeesteeeee Heaveeeenllllllly." The ghost's voice swept across the room.
"That would be me." I stated plainly.
"WAITTTT WAITTTT AZIIRA!!!" Astraea yelled. "Tell Cece your backstory first!"
"Iffff youuuu wiiiishhhh." In an instant, Astraea and I plunged into her mind.
Azira gazed into the dark shadows of the woods. Thick fog clouded her vision, although she already couldn't see well in the middle of the night. Wolves howled in the distance, and she felt a chill down her spine as she lifted her head to gaze at the full moon. Werewolves. The woods were a dangerous place, especially at full moon, when werewolves awakened. Then a shadow flashed over the moon. It circled above her like a vulture, ready to dive for it's prey. A vampire. Great. Azira started to run, trying to stay out of sight of the vampires. When she ran far away enough that she couldn't see the vampire, she heaved a sigh of relief. Calm down. This isn't your first time in the woods. A branch snapped from behind her, and Azira spun around. Nothing was there.
Then in the midst of the fog, two red eyes glowed back at her. She stumbled back, and tripped over a thorn vine. Blood trickled down her ankle and pain flashed through her mind. Still, she stood up with much effort, and lit her finger with a spell of light. The eyes were gone. A low hissing sound came from the trees to her left, and Azira turned to see a large snake gliding towards her, fangs glinting in the moonlight. The snake lunged for her, bloodshot eyes staring into her soul. In a panic, she did the first thing she could think of, and flicked her wrist, creating chain on the snake, tying it to the ground. The forest turned an eerie silent, as if anticipating what would happen next.
Then the snake broke through. The chains snapped, and turned to ash as they hit the ground. It slithered towards her, sharp fangs poised to strike. The frightened girl stepped back, and felt her foot slip in a hole and get caught in a root. She fell back. She tried to pull her leg out, but tree roots wrapped around her foot tightly, as if trying to drag her down.
The snake glided up to her, and sunk its sharp fangs into her arm. Her mind went blank with pain, and her breath caught in her throat.
Then in the midst of it all came a voice. A voice entered her mind. Choose to join me...or choose to die.
If those are my options, then I choose to die.
Azira drew in a final ragged breath and her world went black.
