CHAPTER ONE

"Reese, Malcolm, Maddie, Dewey...get up! You don't wanna be late for the last day!"

I awoke to my mom screaming our names from the kitchen.
I feel something heavy on my chest, so I open my eyes and my little brother is sitting catlike on my chest just staring at me!

"Hey Mads" he says with a toothless smile.
"Ugh, Dewey, get off" I say as I fling him across the bed onto Malcolm.

Yeah, that's right, we share a bed. Our parents had somehow managed to cram us 4 kids into one bedroom. Reese (13) gets his own single bed because he's the next oldest after Francis (16) and Malcolm and I being twins (12) share a queen bed with Dewey (6). At least we're little and have some room without kicking each other out of bed!

I quickly roll out of bed and chuck my clothes on. I dive into the jack and jill bathroom that we share with our parents to brush my hair and throw it up in a ponytail. I walk out just as my 3 brothers roll out of bed. I go out to the kitchen and find mom making waffles and dad reading the paper with his morning coffee in hand.

"Morning mom, morning dad" I say as I sit down and grab the juice.
"Morning honey" mom says as she tips a couple of waffles onto my plate in front of me.

"Morning Mads" says dad with a smile.

Within seconds, the boys were out of the bedroom and already at each other's throats.

"Mom! Malcolm stole..." Reese begins to say but gets cut off.
"Reese, I dont wanna hear about it! Now sit down and eat your breakfast" Mom says through gritted teeth.

Reese rolls his eyes and Malcolm has a big grin as they sit down to eat their waffles. Like most boys, my brothers eat like animals. Eating at a hundred miles an hour, mainly because when we were younger, Francis used to steal our food if we weren't eating it quick enough. It's definitely muscle memory, but for good reason because it still happens sometimes! The perpetrator...Reese, but it can be all three sometimes. Hence why I always try to make sure I'm eating before them, so I dont become a target.

"Boys, boys, slow down! We don't need someone choking! As it is, we can't afford another hospital trip this month!" Says dad frowning at my feral brothers.
"Oh, Hal, let them go. They might learn that way not to scoff food. I'll do the heimlich manoeuvre if I have to" says mom, shaking her head.

"I guess you're right, Lois. Anyways, I better be off" says dad, shrugging and folding up the newspaper.
"Bye dad" we all say in unison.
"Bye kids. Behave yourselves at school, we don't need the principal calling us the day before Summer starts!" Says dad as he grabs his bag and walks out the door.

Waffles eaten, none stolen and no choking, we grab our lunch bags. It's a lucky dip with what we get half the time. Sometimes, you hit the jackpot. Other times, you wish you didn't even have it in your presence, especially around other people! Week old leftovers are the worst of the worst. Get that and you heed the fact that you'll be hungry for the entire day. Some kids get real yummy lunches on the last day of school, but if you can't tell, that doesn't apply to us!

"One of you has got egg salad today!" Mom says as she shoves us out the front door to walk to school.
"Oh god!" Says Malcolm peering into his bag.

From what I can tell, I haven't got it. My lunchbag smells okay. That means one of the other three's got it. Haha suckers!

"Hey, you guys, just be thankful you've got lunch! There's kids starving in parts of the world that would be thankful for egg salad! Now haul ass and get to school!" Lectures mom as she's standing at the door in her PJs.

"Yes, mom. Bye mom" we say in unison.

"And look after Dewey! We don't need him wandering off again!" She yells.

"That would be a shame" says Reese under his breath.

"And make sure you come straight home after school, no monkey business! I know you finish at 1:30pm, so I will be calling the house at 1:50pm to make sure you're home. Trust me, if that phone goes unanswered or not all of you are here to check in, heads will roll!" Says mom with her classic crazy eyes look.

"Got it, under control. Bye mom" says Malcolm.

We get halfway to school and Dewey starts dragging the chain.

"Dewey c'mon! Just walk with us for crying out loud!" Malcolm says as he drags him along the sidewalk.
"I want Mads to hold my hand!" Yells Dewey as he's getting dragged along.
"C'mon Dewey, you're too old for hand holding!" Says Reese shaking his head.
"No, I'm not!" Says Dewey, raising his voice and yanking his wrist out of Malcolms grip.
"Are too butt munch!" Says Reese as he stops in the middle of the sidewalk.
"Nuh, uh!" Says Dewey, crossing his arms.
"Oh geez! Guys, shut up! Dewey, just walk with us, okay" I say, getting fed up with their bickering.
"Ugh, fine. You guys suck!" Says Dewey screwing up his face.
"Tell us something we don't know Dewey!" Says Reese chucking.
