"Touchdown by #4, Liam Gregory! What a glorious forty-yard pass! I don’t think that’s ever been done before! “
I took off my helmet and wiped the sweat off my face. I grinned and was suddenly attacked by my teammates. We did it, we had won. That mason guy held his hand out to me and I contemplated taking it. Shit, why the hell not? I shook his hand. We were soon joined by the cheerleaders. I looked around for Brinsley but came face to face with that Ashleigh chick. God, what the hell was it with girls? I had told her right off the bat that I didn’t want anything serious.
“That was some game” she said leaning in to be heard over the crowd’s roar
“Wasn’t it? Now if you’ll excuse me” I said still looking for Brins.
“Wait” she touched my arm, “are you coming to the party?”
I spotted Brinsley who was jumping up and down hugging Mason. You have got to be kidding me. I shook my head and faced Ashleigh.
“Nah, I’m actually heading home”
Ashleigh scowled and rolled her eyes, “Your loss” she muttered walking away.
I laughed and mock saluted her. I walked into the locker room and headed straight into the shower.
I was rinsing off when I heard Mason’s voice, “Nah, I was supposed to take her out but I have to head straight home. Apparently, my grandmother is coming into town and –“ He was interrupted by the boys booing. I walked out of the shower and wrapped my towel around my waist.
“Well, sucks for you dude” Riley added.
“You still going out with Alicia?” Mason asked
“Fuck yeah. I gave her a ride to Hannah’s party and I don’t wanna brag or anything but she totally digs me”, Riley stood on the bench and flipped his hair.
A whole bunch of the guys responded by whipping him with their towel. I couldn’t help but laugh. Mason glanced at me and asked, “So what’s the deal with you and Ashleigh?”
I shook my head, “Nothings going on”
Mason looked at me for a second and nodded, “Well I’ll see you guys later”.
I waited a couple of minutes before I rushed out of the locker room and into the parking lot.
I immediately spotted her getting into her car. I ran over and noticing that her window was down, I leaned over. She noticed me and smiled, “Congrats on the game! That was amazing” she said shaking her head.
Woah. I definitely didn’t expect her to be this civil. “Yeah, thanks. So listen, what are your plans for today?”
She looked at the time. “Well, I promised Alicia that we’d check out the after party. Aren’t you going?”
I feigned innocence, “What about Mason? Is he coming too?”
She shook her head, “No, he had some things to take care of”
I smiled, perfect. This was it. I’d get her to go somewhere else with me and I’d explain everything. I’d explain why I never kept in touch with her.
