Leave In The Morning

6:00 am

The obnoxious beeping of an alarm made me groan, rolling over in the shared bed I pulled the blanket over my head.

Moments after the alarm was stopped, I felt a familiar hand on the blanket. Mike sat up in bed, rewinding the tape on his nightstand and putting his pills in the drawer.

Just as he was finishing his morning workout, I sat up. Rubbing my eyes groggily and sitting against the wall.

"You work early?" I hear his voice ask, opening my eyes to see him dressing himself and doing up the buttons on his shirt.

"Mm, no. but you do and someone's gotta take Abby to school," I reply, lazily swinging my braided hair over my shoulder and standing from the bed.

He sighed, walking up to me and going to kiss me. "right-"

I stopped him, pushing his face away, "Morning breath."

He sighed and nodded, "Right. I'm gonna wake her up."

I nodded without a word and made my trip to the bathroom.

Brushing my teeth, washing my face and quickly getting changed. I made my way to the kitchen and started a pot of coffee for the two of us.

Hearing a squeak and a quiet thud from the hall, I stepped around the corner and looked at Mike. He gestured to the bear on the floor and rolled his eyes. Going back to what I was doing, I got two mugs out and filled them, just as he entered the kitchen.

"I won't be off late, should be just around 5.." Mike started, taking the cup from my hand while I took his unfasted tie and started doing it.

"I start at 4- but I'll be home by 11... I can pick Abby up and let her in the house. Then I'll call Max." I replied, finishing his tie and grabbing the lunch bag from the counter.

Hearing Abby come down the hall I held it out to her as she entered. We walked to the door, got our shoes on and I passed Abby's jacket over to Mike so he could help her with it. Putting on my own and grabbing my keys.

We left the house. I locked the door while Abby got in my car and Mike went to his. Before I got into my car, I went to the driver's seat of his car and gestured for him to roll the window down.

As he did, I pressed a quick kiss to his lips before leaning back up. "Don't fall asleep on the job," I joked, walking back to my car and getting in.

He left the driveway first, and I went shortly after.

Getting Abby to school was the easy part, getting gas on the way home made my wallet feel too light for comfort.

Getting home by 9 gave me around 6 and a half hours until I had to leave again. So I sat on the couch with my sketchbook and drawing materials, turned on the TV, and set my coffee on the table.

The next 6 hours of my quiet life.

Getting up off the couch I stretched my limbs and heard a satisfying crack in my back. Walking to the kitchen I opened the freezer door and stared blankly inside.

picking at the sparkly blue nail polish that had begun to chip, eyes landing on the frozen ground beef, I grabbed it and put it on the stovetop to defrost.

While that happened, I went to the bathroom to shower.

Once I had freshened up and rebraided my hair, I went back to the kitchen to cook. A frustrating cooking process and a hunt for somehow lost ingredients later, lasagna was in the oven.

I checked the clock. 3:29 pm.

I grabbed the phone and dialled the familiar number. It only took a few rings for the other side to answer,

"Hello?"

"Hey Max, I'm about to go pick up Abby, let yourself in."

"Okay, thanks."

10:30 pm

I locked my car quietly and went to the door. Stepping inside the house I left my bag on the floor and slipped off my shoes.

I didn't hear any noise from Abby's room, which meant she was asleep. Turning to my left to check the cleanliness of our living room, my eyes landed on the sleeping figure of Mike.

I sighed, walking towards him and kneeling beside him. I shook him gently, realizing too late that my hands must be freezing.

He jerked up and I was careful to not let him bump into me, he sat still for a second then turned to me when I stood back up.

"I take it you don't want to spend the night on the couch?" I asked, slipping my jacket off and hanging it over the back of the chair.

He sighed but nodded, standing from the couch and fixing it up before walking to the bedroom. I let myself into the bathroom first, washing my makeup off and freshening up before going to our room.

I closed the door after entering, walking to my dresser and swapping out my day clothes for pyjama pants and a t-shirt.

As I got in bed, I watched him sit on the edge, take his pills and play the tape that sat on his bedside table.

I got comfortable after he turned the light off, muttering a soft 'goodnight' and then turning over on my side to face the window.

I fell asleep pretty easily, but I couldn't do anything to help him sleep.

I woke up feeling extra tired. Rolling over and looking at the clock made me panic for only a second.

It was about half past 10, way too late for me to take Abby to school.

It only took me a few seconds to remember that Mike was taking her since he had a meeting with his aunt. I didn't like his aunt, nor did I think anyone did. However, it's necessary to have the meetings so we can keep Abby in our care.

We have a system that works for us, and Abby is happy. That's what matters.

For Mikes sanity and the sake of her happiness, I would do anything to keep it this way.
