"But that's alright," Brielle says, her smile warm with a hint of a smug attitude. "You got through it all, with a little thanks to me."
I grin, thinking of the silly "therapy techniques" Brielle introduced to me, especially the one that required us to sing and dance to our favorite songs at the top of our lungs on the hillside overlooking the ocean, and while the rain fell. It was a miracle we didn't get sick that day!
"Of course," I say dramatically, "what would I have done without you?" I pretend to swoon, earning a laugh from Brielle. "But seriously," I say as we stop, "I'm glad you were around when I needed you."
She extends her hand to hold mine and squeezes. "It was my pleasure," she says, her eyes sparkling and sincere.
Sammy barks as he looks up at us, scampering around our feet. "Okay," Brielle says to him, "we'll keep walking." And we did, our heads higher, our eyes brighter, and our hands still together.
And sure, I think, my summer days with Chloe were alright, but my autumn days with Brielle will be even better than I can imagine.
