The Next Day

My mom and I are on our way to my grandma's house to see the family. My mom's side of the family is really small. Its only me, my mom, grandma, aunt and two cousins, Bri and Jaquann.

When we pulled up to the house, I got out and walked up to the door. Before I could knock the door opened and I made eye contact with my Aunt Aaliyah. She was so beautiful. She was light skinned, had medium length hair, brown eyes and had a very pretty smile. She looked great for her age. She looked great for her age. Aaliyah is 37 but looks 25.

"Maya!!" Aaliyah said before pulling me into a hug.

"Hey Aaliyah." I said as I hugged her back.

We hugged for a while until we heard my mom say "So I'm guessing I don't get any love?"

Aaliyah let go over me and went to go hug her.

I walked inside and searched the house until I found my grandma. She was in the kitchen making some sort of dessert.

"Granny!" I yelled as I ran to give her a hug. My grandma was also light skinned with short, black are and brown eyes.

"Hey Sweetie," she said back giving me a quick hug before she went back to making what looked like peach cobbler. "How you been?"

"I've been good Granny. How about you?"

"I've been go.." "Mommy!" Granny was cut off by my mom screaming her name.

I watched as they had their little reunion and sat next to Aaliyah. They adventually broke apart came and sat with us at the island.

"So tonight we are having poem night with just us girls." Aaliyah said to both me and my mom. I smiled at that one of the things I love to do.

"That sounds pretty good to me," my mom said "how do you feel Maya?"

"I love the idea. Will Bri be here?" I asked.

"No actually, she went on a senior trip to London. She won't be back till Monday." Aaliyah said.

"And it is also your first day of school." my mom added.

I talked to Bri yesterday and she said they were only a month ahead of us but I should fit right in. Its the middle of the school year and I will be going to Northwest High School. That's were she goes so it shouldn't be that bad.

Later that night

"Okay so I'll go first." my mom said. She got up in first of u. "Its called Precious Gift."

"When times seem too hard to bear and I feel like giving up
I vision your beautiful face, the twinkle of your eyes and things of such
The bond we created from my womb to the day you were born
Is a mother and daughter bond that can never be torn
With the strength and guidance of God and the blessings he pours down from above
I want to be the best mom I can be to you and embrace you with all my love
You are as precious as a flower and as gorgeous as a rose
You have been specially made to the very tip of your nose
You are as sweet as honey; such an innocent young child
You are brighter than any star in the sky every time you smile
I want you to be proud of who you are and strive to be the best
Put forth efforts to achieve your goals and let God do the rest
I will always be your mother first, but I'm also your friend
You are the most precious gift, that I've ever been given

With All My Love,
Mommy"

I got up and hugged my mom. That was a really good poem and I loved it.

Next up was Granny and her poem was about live being to short to regret anything you do. Then Aaliyah went and hers was about never giving up. Now its my turn. I got out of my seat and took the paper out my pocket. I walked to the front to face everybody.

"Okay so my poem is called My Dad." I looked down at the paper and took a deep breath.

"Do you know how it feels to lose someone?
How you go through grief and pain?
I know how that feels,
and how it feels to always live in rain.
I remember it like it was yesterday,
how I stood by my dad's side.
And how I couldn't bare to look at him,
but all I did was cry.
I knew I couldn't help him,
I couldn't fix his pain.
I couldn't stop myself from crying,
I couldn't help him in anyway.
I wanted to help my dad,
but they said it was to late.
How could it have come to this,
to this horrible fate.
My dad was loving,
he was a caring guy.
Maybe he wasn't perfect,
but he didn't cheat, steal or lie.
I loved my dad,
I loved him with all my heart.
But there was nothing I could do,
It was too late from the start.
They said they caught it too late,
there was nothing they could do.
But just let him pass on,
it was hard but it was true.
It's been some years,
It doesn't feel like it's been that long.
And it still hurts,
but he's now where he belongs.
No matter what happens,
he'll always be loved.
Until the day I die,
and I join him up above.
He's up there somewhere with God,
He's in his rightful place.
And even though I want him back,
It's a tragedy I have to face.
Sometimes at night,
I cry myself to sleep.
But through the year of darkness,
the depression I'll have to defeat.
His love,
is what keeps me hanging on.
Love is a strong word,
Because it's kept me alive this long.
But there is one more thing,
that I have to say.
My dad's love will go on and on,
and he's in my heart to stay."

I was in tears by the time I was done. My mom tried hugging me but I just walked off to my grandma's room.

About 5 minutes later my cousin, Jaquann came in the room. Jaquann is Aaliyah's son. He is 13 years old, dark skinned with curly hair.

"Hey I heard your poem. Are you alright?" he asked me.

"Its just so hard." I cried out.

"Oh I know." Jaquann says before he pulls me into a hug. I swear I love him so much.
