Piper Hawkens. Senior at Harmen High.
You think that would be enough right? Wrong.
Everyone is placed into categories in their lifetime. Mostly this happens in High School. People have been trying to categorize me my entire life.
I wish someone would figure it out already and let me know.
No I'm not the nice cheerleader, or the rude one. Im not the hottest guys in schools ex girlfriend. I'm not the bully or the jock, the drama school expert or the social butterfly. Im not know for my academic achievements in Harmen High, or my undying school spirit.
I have just always been someone that people flock too.
You know that one person in your school that everyone knows?
Well around here, thats me.
I have a few best friends, a handful of friends a bunch of people who call me their 'friend' a school full of acquaintances and enemies around every corner.
If you were to ask around about me, the answers you would get from the masses would all vary.
"She scares me honestly, I heard she boxes in a undergound ring with men" That from an incoming freshmen. Boxes? Yes. Underground Ring? I won't deny I haven't been. With men? Don't be ridiculous.
"I think she is a snob. Years of gymnastics and she doesn't even want to show school spirit?" Cheerleader obviously.
"She's hot man. Insanely so. And that body" Do I even have to say?
"She is the best person I know. She is beautiful and caring and has a huge heart. She is just also cunning and confident and that scares people. That amount of confidence is intimidating." Cami obviously.
The thing is, people have tried to put me into a category my entire life. Since I was born I've lived in Southern Pennsylvania. I was raised by my father until I was 7 so you can imagine my tomboyish ways have since unnerved my Auntie Mary. Who I unceremoniously moved in with when my drunken enraged father dropped me off at her doorstep, because I spilled kool aid on his white sneakers. Father of the year right? We haven't heard from him since.
Aunt Mary has a son named Jake, same age as me. Our birthdays are literally a week apart. My Dad and Aunt Mary were twins so me and Jake also look like siblings. The family resemblances between us is uncanny. I look like I belong with them aside from my bright green eyes to their deep brown.
Here's the thing I have no abandonment issues, no poor me problems, I think that uneases people especially my aunt. It's like my entire life everyone's been waiting for me to crack and still, it just hasn't happened.
Jake is for all intent and purposes, my brother. He is also one of my closest friends, and of course a huge Jock much to my disliking.
Back to ours schools 'Put Piper into a category issue' Tomboy could have been close except for I wasn't just that. I was extremely athletic and competitive, just not for any school related activities. I was far from a snob, and I didn't frown on organized school activities. They just weren't for me, I lived and breathed for gymnastics and boxing.
Jake was our schools varsity goalie, team captain and my best friend Cami was our Volleyball Captain, both very all things school spirit. I wasn't mean to anyone who I believed didn't deserve it, but I couldn't be categorized as a nice girl considering I had quite a few people who I believed deserved my ruthless attitude. I wasn't a prude by no means, but I was busy so I wasn't at a party every other night either.
So again where does Piper Hawkens belong ? Depends on who you ask.
But these aren't the opinions I care about I care about my own, more importantly Mrs. Jamison cares and she cares so much that yesterday on the second day of senior year she assigned us all a paper due at the end of the year wanting to know just that.
Who are we? Who do we think we are?
I never realized how unsure I was until that question was asked.
