WHEN NIGHT COMES / Chapter Five
It was dark and raining when the Adams sisters arrived at the Schmidt house. The door was unlocked so the two headed straight inside.
They were both drenched from head to toe. Mía shook her hair out to dry herself like a dog would, and her sister followed suit as she called out, "Mike!"
He didn't respond.
Zion glanced over to Mía in confusion, who just shrugged and rushed over to the TV, switching it on and beginning to watch the cartoons that were playing.
"Mike!" She called out again.
"Gimme a minute!" He replied, sounding out of breath.
"I want to go with you!" Abby's voice pleaded.
The two rounded the corner and entered the hallway. Abby was slung over Mike's shoulder as the girl clawed fiercely at him, grabbing at anything she could and squealing in annoyance. She was wearing his security vest.
"Abby, stop!" Mike exclaimed as he attempted to wrestle her out of the vest while carrying her. His sweater was lifted up in the struggle. Zion tried and failed to not stare at his exposed happy trail.
"Zion, help!" Abby cried out, grabbing the doorway to prevent Mike from taking her further down the hall, "He's taking my vest!"
Zion only watched the interaction with a small chuckle leaving her lips.
"You can't make me!" Abby shrieked.
"Yes, I can!" Mike retorted as he began to pry the girl's fingers off of the doorway.
Suddenly, Mía sprinted down the hallway, barrelling straight into him. She began to pull at Mike's arms, trying to get him to let go of her friend.
Abby screamed and wriggled in Mike's grip. He almost dropped her but managed to keep her over his shoulder with one hand, the other trying to fight off Mía's attacks.
"Do you need help there, Mike?" Zion called out, unable to stop herself from laughing at the scene in front of her.
"I've got—" Mike let out a grunt as Mía whacked him right in the stomach.
Shaking her head to herself, Zion headed toward them and scooped Mía into her arms, holding her upside down and giving her a small shake. "You don't hit people who don't deserve it!" She scolded her sister. The girl only giggled.
"He's killing me!" Abby wailed.
Mía managed to wriggle out of her sister's grasp and she dropped to the floor. She attempted pull Mike off of Abby but the man just dragged the two into his sister's room.
Zion watched as he finally managed to pull the vest off of his sister, then let out one long sigh. She couldn't help but laugh.
"You're evil!" Abby shrieked, dramatically falling to her knees in exaggerated despair.
"We'll get him next time," Mía signed. Abby nodded in agreement before sticking her tongue out at the two adults and slamming her bedroom door in their faces.
Mike sighed again. He glanced Zion up and down, took in her drenched appearance, "You look nice."
She raised an eyebrow at him, "Are you being sarcastic?"
"You'll never know."
Zion scowled when she realised he was copying what she'd texted him yesterday, "Asshole."
"I know," Mike smiled.
Zion followed him as he walked down the hallway and into his bedroom. Peeking her head inside, she found it surprisingly not messy. Not tidy nor clean, but it was decently organised.
