Ria unlocked the door, opening it with a small sigh. The words of her professor ran through her head, medulla oblongata, pons, thalamus. She knew medical school would be hard, very hard, but everything was pilling onto each other. She really needed to do some revision, she couldn't be behind.
Her golden retriever dog, betty quickly ran up to her, whimpers coming out of her mouth as Ria snapped out of her thoughts, frowning at the dogs unusual sounds. She crouched down to her height, ruffling her fur softly.
"What's up, betty? Need a walk, or maybe the potty?" Ria asked, now massaging behind the dog's ears.
"Nah, he's good." A male voice say's through the kitchen, making her freeze. Her hands fell from Betty's fur, looking up from her crouched down position. "We already took him out."
Ria suddenly started to hear her heart beating in her ears, the colour fading from her face. There stood 3 men, the one who spoke sitting casually against the cabinet, dressed in all black. A gun loosely in his hands, brushing the
side of the barrel. He had a smirk on his face, staring at Ria with his dark eyes that made her feel like he was looking in her soul."Relax, Mama." The man said, amused by her frightens . "I just want you to call your lady friends over so we can all have a little talk."
The silence seemed to fill the room, adding to the eerie situation. She stood up, her legs threatening to buckle underneath her at the guns. "What do you mean?" Ria asked, surprised she could even form words.
"You know what I mean."
In all honesty, Ria had absolutely no idea what he was on about, but she wasn't going to admit that, not with the guns in the room. She was blinded to what her mum had just done, and the silence filled the room again.
But the silence was quickly replaced with the sound on the front door opening, and there stood Beth, the reason of it all. Her expressions mimicked Ria's from before, but it seemed to switch as she saw Ria in the room, quickly dropping her shopping bags and stepping slightly in front of her daughter.
"Who are you?" Beth asked, her voice steady but her face giving it all away.
The man smirks widened at the sight, lowering his head and letting out a chuckle, shaking his head. Everything seemed to finally connect for him. "I thought she looked young to be robbing a store."
Beth tensed up slightly, bitting the inside of her cheek. How did he already know? They definitely weren't the police, so what did they want?
The man got off the counter, walking slightly closer to the two, causing Beth and Ria to step back, Beth still making sure to be slightly in front of her. "Call your lady friends, mama."
"Okay, okay. Just leave her out of it." Beth breathy said, panic running through her voice.
The man chuckled, his eyes drifting to Ria, piercing into hers.
"No, I don't think I will."
