'The first of the contestants will arrive any minute now princess' Arthur announces as he walked into my sitting room. Arthur is a third generation assistant for the royal family. He's been my assistant since I assumed official duties at 16. Ten years older than me puts him at 32 years old. In the six years we've been working together we've fallen into a rhythm. I don't know how he does it but he can expect what I need before I even think about it. Which is very convenient during intense endless meetings.
'Who is set to arrive first?' I ask looking up from the documents strung out on the coffee table.
'Lord and Lady Black of the flatlands. Along with their eldest son and daughter, Wilbert and Alice.' He informs me and sits down in the plush dark green chair across from me.
'Wilbert?' I ask in amusement. He just rolls his eyes and takes a look at the papers between us.
'What's this about?' He questions me. 'I thought your father said to focus on the contest' Looking up at me he adds, 'Matter of the fact I know he did because he specifically asked me to clear your schedule for the next month.'
Looking back at the papers I sigh and lift it up to show him. 'I'm just reviewing our tests.'
He looks exasperated but says 'Princess, the King, Queen, captain of the guard, all their assistance, you and me have poured over the plans for this contest. We've set all the components up and worked out ever possible problem. At the end you will find a husband who is worthy of having such a title and position.'
'I know everyone's looked over my plans and everything should work out, but this contest. The whole concept it crazy. Finding the person who's supposed to be the next Prince consort to this kingdom through a series of test? It's insane.' Honestly I'm not sure how this tradition of heirs finding their spouses has worked thus far.
Arthur smiles as the drums sound signaling the first arrival of the noble families. We will be hearing those drums all day as all 32 families arrive at the castle. Each bringing their contestant for my hand in marriage with them. 'It is a tradition that has worked for over 1500 years. Giving this kingdom stability and honor. Plus, who doesn't want to see 43 of the most beautiful men in Celestia fight for your hand?'
