She's A Bad Idea

I know Applejack's truck like I know every Wonderbolts rotation. She's always offering rides to everyone, so we've all been in it a few times. I call shotgun every time— not to sit closer to AJ! Well. Not only to sit closer to AJ. It's also because sitting in the backseat of this truck is like being stuck in a bumper car for twenty minutes. Not my idea of a good time.

Since it's only us two this time, I don't have to call dibs or anything. I hop into the passenger seat while Applejack tosses her bag around the back.

"Slushies!" I throw my hands up in celebration. "Finally! English was so boring today even Mr. Doodle dozed off,"

AJ starts the engine with a half-smile. "That ain't much of a feat, sugarcube. " Mr. Doodle's kinda notorious around CHS for snoozing on the job. Makes sense, the guy's like, 46. I'm surprised he hasn't turned to ash already.

"Still, though! Today was such a slog. Thinking of cold sugary crap was the only thing that kept me going," I lean back and watch out the window as we pull out the parking lot and hit the road.

After a minute or two of driving, Applejack clears her throat. "Tell me something."

Don't like the sound of that. "What's up?"

AJ keeps her eyes locked on the road ahead, poker-faced. "Why'd you wanna come out today?"

She's doing her best not to give anything away in her voice or expression, not looking me in the eye. If I didn't know better, I'd say that she sounded suspicious just now.

But I do know better(obviously) and I can tell she's less suspicious and more concerned. Can't blame her— I know I've been off these past couple weeks.

Has it been bothering her? I think back to her being all ruffled just this morning. She said it was Rarity getting on her nerves, but....maybe I played a part in it, too.

...Nah. That's crazy talk! Knowing Applejack, she probably still suspects I'm gonna make her pay for my slushie, and she's tryna figure me out early.

"Just wanted to hang out with the second coolest person in town," I put on my best innocent and totally not plotting smile. She shoots me a look.

"Y'all don't really expect me to buy that, do you?" Applejack scoffs. "Ah'm almost offended,"

"Hey, I'm being honest! We haven't done anything just the two of us since summer, so I was like, why not?"

"That so?" We're pulling up to the gas station now. AJ puts the truck into reverse and slides back into one of the many free parking spots.

"When have I ever lied to you?" She opens her mouth and I quickly tack on, "Don't answer that!"

She rolls her eyes, hard. Don't ask me how I can tell if she's doing it hard— you wouldn't get it. You have to be there. "Hurry up 'n get unbuckled, Dash."

We head inside, buy our stuff, and make it back to the truck in record time. Usually we have the slushies outside, but it's getting kind of cold. I don't say that out loud, though, and neither does she. I guess we both don't wanna admit it.

"When do y'all need t'be back home?"

"Uhh, did you forget? I'm flyin' solo, AJ," I flash my apartment keys with a grin. "I can get back to my place at 5:00 am, and no-one can take my guitar away for it,"

She raises a eyebrow at me. "Yunno, the longer yer livin' alone, the more Ah'm questionin' yer folks fer lettin' it happen,"

I take another slurp of my slushie(halfway done already, since I'm cool like that). "What's that supposed to mean?"
