In my life, the world has changed, leaving me alone in the world. It was a dreary day that changed my life and the lives of everyone else. I was only four, but I remember that retched day. My older sister and I were walking home from school with our parents whispering behind us. We were ignorant, and didn’t catch our parents’ worried glances. Suddenly, there was a scream behind us, “RUN! THEY’VE ARRIVED!”  Our parents grabbed the two of us and they ran. We took off to the park and headed towards the fenced forest that haunted what would normally be a cheerful landscape, but was full of confusion. We didn’t slow until we came to the fence, which are parents took us over it and got us lost in the woods.  They kept walking, until there was no longer light, when we finally stopped for the night.

That time was almost thirteen years ago, I am now eighteen years ago. Our family wasn’t able to escape the new government for long, but was able to avoid the trouble that many families failed to avoid. My dad was able to secure a very high up role in the government and could keep our lives happy, or keep us healthy. Many people were starving, though you never saw it unless you knew-

“Ann we need to go,” my mom called to me. “We need to get you there.”

“Must I go?” I dragged my feet on the floor, but continued to her none the less. I was on my way to meet with the biggest dork ever. I mustn’t say that he is the son of the current ‘president’ was infatuated with me. I was unable to break up with him, I had attempted, but with the way the government was, I had no choice.

“Ann! We need to have left already,” I threw on my jacket and walked down the stairs and out the open door.

My sister, Joy, snuck up behind me, “I have what you asked for,” she whispered in my ear, “I’ll give it to you, when you return.”

“Bowing out today?” no matter how horrible my life was, Joy was always able to remind me of better times.

She laughed, “Meeting with- you know.”

“Got your drift, have fun. Wish I could be there.”

“Ann, get here now!” my mom yelled at me. “We are late, and we haven’t left yet.”

“Love you too mom,” I gave Joy a hug and jogged to where she was standing. Sometimes I miss my mom from back before the government fell and was replaced with the corrupt way of living that there now is. She didn’t constantly fear for our lives, no longer was she incredibly calm but strict and serious. There are moments that I see the old her, but she has had to change to keep the opinionated me quiet.

“My darling Ann,” Warren greeted me with a kiss my hand.. He attempted to go in for a peck on the lips, but I side stepped him. “How are you today?”

“I’m good Warren, you seem um...” I didn’t know what to say. “How are you doing?”

“Much better now that I’m with you,” he grabbed ahold of my hand. “I have a surprise for you, but as you are late, it shall have to hold off until later. We must be on our way.”

“Warren,” I turned my eyes to his, “can you just show me the surprise, I’m not  feeling good and would like to return home so that I may rest?”

“I am sorry my dear, you so appear pale, but we are unable to move this date.”

“Why?” I was unable to fathom why I couldn’t get him to postpone, he normally would let me get away rather quickly.

“I told you last week, my father...”

“Oh, um… I recall now,” I racked my brain trying to recall what he had said.

“I can’t believe that my father is making him go with him for three months and tour the provinces.”

                “THREE MONTHS!”

He must have taken my outburst as I was upset, though it was really out of joy, “Don’t worry sweetheart, you’ll always be the most important person to me.” I just stood there awkwardly, unsure of what to do or say. Thankfully before I had to come up with a lie for him, he led me off down one of the multiple hallways in his house. I managed to wiggle my hand free of his clammy one. His musty brown hair was mussed as though he was trying to look sexy, but made him look ridiculous with his pasty skin and willowy frame.

“Ann? Are you even listening to me?” Warren ruined the peaceful world inside my head.

“I’m sorry how terribly rude of me,” I sighed. “I’m not feeling that good, are you sure that I am unable to return home and rest.”

“I fear that if I don’t allow it you would get incredibly ill, and we wouldn’t want that now would we?” he went deep into thought and started to mutter to himself. I was unable to catch what he was saying, but I think I almost had him convinced to let me leave.

A random man walked up to us and whispered something into Warren’s ear. “I am extremely sorry my dear Ann, but it seems as though I must really call this short. Please, go home and rest I hope you are better soon and I shall see you before I must leave.” He pulled me in and gave a rather slobbery kiss on my lips.

“Here is the paper that you wanted,” Joy gave it to me as I was collapsing on my bed.

“Thanks,” I ripped the envelope open and peered inside.  “They want to meet me tonight!”

“And…” Joy laughed at me. “Hot date with Warren?”

“Nope, hot and Warren don’t belong in the same sentence. I don’t know how you could even think that.”

“So are you excited about tonight?” Joy asked. “This is a new group and very elite.”

“This will be tough, but I can’t wait to join in the rebellion. I just can’t let them know about my ‘relationship’ with Warren.” I flopped on my bed trying to get in a long nap before an even longer evening.
