Unaware of the storm that was going to hit me in a few hours, I rolled into the office feeling really good. I was wearing a black top and a black pencil skirt in which I felt beautiful. It was a day of pleasant weather. There was not much heat or cold. The breeze moved my hair gently on my way to the office instead of blowing it into a rat's nest in the usual way it did.
When I passed the reception desk, the receptionist, Vindhya, who usually wore a sour face, greeted me with a smile and a wave. I smiled and waved back at her, wondering if I was going to have that perfect day everyone had once in a while. God knew I could use one.
When I took the elevator to the tenth floor, I was the only one in and instead of standing in a corner awkwardly; I hummed a tune until the doors opened and I stepped out. Usually, I saw the interns at the start of the day as they came or went into Vedh's office to report to him about their work. It usually put me in a bad mood as they gave me haughty looks as though I was a slacker who got the position through nepotism. Today, no one was there in the seating area as I made my way into the corner office that overlooked the entire city.
Vedh was sitting in his chair, looking into his laptop and grinning like he had just won the lottery. When I asked for his permission to come in, he looked at me, and his grin grew even wider if that was possible.
"Come in, Janvi. Come in," he waved me inside. His joy was infectious and I was smiling as I stepped into his office and closed the door behind me.
"What is it, Vedh?" I asked as I took a seat across the desk. It still felt weird calling my boss by his first name, but he insisted on it. "You look so excited."
"I am," he nodded. "And you will be too when you find out."
"Then don't keep me in suspense," I said, leaning forward.
"We got a project. A great one. My father and I have been lobbying for this for a long time. I am going to be the head of this project. This will be my biggest undertaking to this date and if I complete this successfully, my father will be so proud of me."
"I have no doubt that you will succeed," I said, really meaning it. Vedh might not look so serious but he was really focused when needed.
"I hope so. And you seem to be my Lady Luck. Since you started interning here, everything I touched turned into gold." He said, making me blush with embarrassment.
"Come on, give yourself more credit. There is no such thing as luck. It's all your hard work." I said.
"You believe what you believe and I believe what I believe," he said, cocking his head.
I couldn't help but be flattered by his words. Vedh had that effect on everybody. Making someone feel special. Like they were the only person that mattered to him. Especially with women. I saw even cold-looking female executives blush and flirt in his presence.
"So, what are we going to do next," I asked, trying to take the attention off me.
"What we do with every project. Form a stellar team. Get a quote. Design a concept and start the campaign. But first of all, I want to meet the CEO of the company so we could greet each other in person and I could understand their requirements at a personal level."
"Sounds great. How may I help?" I asked, getting contact high. This sounded like a very prestigious project. Something that would make my resume look top-notch.
"Just be by my side and do everything I say," he said, looking back at his laptop. "But first, could you grab my usual coffee and meet me at the car?"
"Sure," I said and rushed to Vedh's favourite coffee shop.
