When they got to the city, they went to register themselves. After getting to the new home the government had given them, they immediately settled down. That’s when it hit Isabelle that she was indeed about to start a new life. New people and a new environment. A few days later, Isabelle went to the palace to start her duty. Isauro still had a few weeks before he’d have to leave for the military. She was tasked with cleaning the stables. The maids who had been around for under three years weren’t allowed anywhere near the royals since they knew little to nothing about the rules of the palace and Isabelle was the newest maid around so she was subject to doing the nastiest chores around. She took the water and brush and headed to the stables, where she was taught how to clean horses. She wasn’t aware she was being bullied with all the chores she had been assigned to.
That day, she went home exhausted, after a tiresome day, her mother massaged her with warm water. While she was resting, Madolika came in with her usual beautiful and perfect smile. “Was it very stressful there?” She asked Isabelle. “Too tiresome. My body’s sore. I honestly don’t even think I have the energy to endure this for much longer” Isabelle said. “Yes, do you have anything to help me? Like can you use your sorcery…” “I can make a bracelet” Madolika said, excitedly. “A bracelet?” Isabelle asked, disappointed. Madolika pulled a thread from Isabelle's bedsheets, an emerald from her ring and began to rub it between her palms, while intoning. After she was done, it became a bracelet with many emerald beads. She gave it to Isabelle and fell onto her bed, exhausted. “These beads are balls of energy. Whenever you're feeling tired, just rub one of them and you’ll feel re-energized” Madolika said. Isabelle was overjoyed and hugged her. “Thanks. Thank you so much” She said.
The next day, Isabelle was assigned to the stables once again, however this time, she was the only one there. She began sweeping around and by the time she was exhausted, she rubbed the beads on her bracelet and felt a surge of energy flow through her body. After sweeping, she started cleaning the horses. While she was cleaning, a guy came in, wearing a lose white shirt, tucked into his trousers. He came and unlocked one of the horses. “Hey!” She called out to him. He turned around. “Me?” He asked, looking around. “No, the ghost behind you, yes you. Put the horse back in. I just finished cleaning it. Come for it after it’s been inspected” She said and approached him. He let out a laugh. “I’m taking it. Later” He said and bowed, then turned away. She ran and stood in front of him and the horse. “What do you want?” He asked her. “You to return the horse obviously. Take back the horse” She said, determined. “Make me” He dared her. She bent and took a shovel, pointing it at the guy. “Don’t make me use this. I’m not about to get in trouble because of you” She said. “How dare you threaten me?” He asked, angry. “Put it back” Isabelle said again. Realizing she had the upper hand with the shovel in hand, the guy let go of the horse and was about to leave but she put the shovel before him. “Take it back” She said, pointing it back at him. He raised his eyebrow in disbelief. “Do I need to repeat mysef?” She said through clenched teeth. The guy turned around and sent the horse back in. She threw away the shovel and went back to what she was doing.
At home, Kakra was weaving fabrics for clothes since the disaster had ruined most of her fabrics while Isauro and Madolika had gone out to search for a place in the market where she could set up a stall. When they got to the market, Madolika was curious about almost everything in sight. Isauro would lose track of her every now and then because she wanted to take a closer look at something. Isauro knew she was new to all she was seeing and didn’t want to ruin her fun so he tried to keep up with her. Madolika saw a child flying a kite and wanted one too, so she went to the kite shop and asked the shopkeeper for one. He told her she needed to pay for it so she reached into her sac bag and brought out a gold coin. The shopkeeper looked at her suspiciously. Just when she was about to hand it over, Isauro snatched it from her hand and handed to him three Bandaa coins.
“It costs six Bandaa coins” The shopkeeper said. After paying him off, Madolika took the kite and thanked Isauro. “Did you use sorcery to make that coin?” Isauro whispered in her ear. “I’m sorry, I didn’t have any money and really wanted the kite” She said. “Pease ask me if you need anything. Your money should match the way you’re dressed and a gold coin is too expensive for someone dressed like you are to be carrying around. You'll draw suspicion. They’ll think you’re a thief or something” Isauro explained. “I don’t want to be falsely accused” Madolika said, scared. “Calm down, you won’t be. Just listen to me and ask me if you need anything” Isauro said. She gave a slight nod and a shy smile. They kept walking through and found a vacant spot. After making enquiries, they found out it was more expensive which made sense because it was at a very convenient location.
They moved on to other parts of the market but although there were vacant spots, the location of those places was not very good for a thriving business. Isauro went with Madolika to a small restaurant to eat lunch. While Madolika was busily eating, Isauro hadn’t even touched his food, trapped in his thoughts. “Is there something wrong?” Madolika asked him and slurped the soup from the bowl. She hadn’t had a meal that tasty, always being used to healthy meals. “I’m just thinking of what to do about the space for my mother’s shop” He said. Madolika slammed the bowl to the table and wiped her lips with the back of her palm and let out a sigh of satisfaction. “Why don’t you let me help you…as a thank you gift” She said. At first Isauro didn’t want to give in but thinking about his mother, he accepted her help.
They went outside the city upon Madolika’s request and she ran and hid in an old straw hut they came across. “Don’t come in” Madolika said excitedly. A wealthy looking man came out of the hut Madolika entered, wearing a robe. Isauro stared at the man, confused and partly scared. “It’s me, Adolika” Madolika said, turning around and she transformed back into herself. Isauro stepped back. “It’s an illusionary spell” She said. “A what?” Isauro asked. “An illusionary spell. I couldn’t cast a shape shifting spell to transform myself since I am not strong enough and this book contains mostly stronger spells” She said as a book appeared into her hand. “You have a book for spells?” Isauro said. “Yes. I don’t know how but I have it. Perhaps my father left it with me, for whatever reason he did what he did” She said, her emotion switching from excitement to sadness. When Isauro realized, he immediately drew her attention. “So what’s the plan now?” He asked. After filling him on her plan, they went into action.
Madolika had transformed into the rich man once again and walked through the streets of the market when suddenly, some horses ran out of their owner’s control towards her and were about to hit her. That was when Isauro came to her rescue and pulled her out of their way. After that, from what the people saw, the wealthy man, much like many other wealthy men, decided to reward the young man for saving his life. He asked Isauro for what he wished for and Isauro told him he wanted to buy a spot for his mother's shop so the wealthy man went to the shop's owner and bought it with gold coins on the boy’s behalf. After buying it, instead of returning to change back, she gifted him a small bag of gold coins, which wasn’t part of the plan. He gave it back to her but she only insisted more that he take it, making him come across as very humble. The people applauded him and encouraged him to take it and he did.
After she changed back and came to him, he hugged her, out of gratitude. She felt butterflies in her belly. It felt beautiful. She blushed and turned her face away from him, walking ahead of him back home. Her little show however, didn’t fall completely on the eyes of the ordinary as one sorcerer in hiding, disguised as an ordinary human, saw through her illusion.
