VEER

————————

My heart was racing at a speed that was not normal for me. As I sat alone in a dimly lit corner of the courtyard, some other men from Atty's family were settled a little away from my couch.

The bathing ceremony had started and Atty had entered into the bath, looking absolutely divine. I couldn't believe this girl was getting married. Though I was sitting quite far from them, I could still see Atty, all smiling and happy.

But my mind wandered through the memories of the past ten years when my eyes kept on searching for her.

I had always known that I'd see her again someday, but I never could have imagined that the universe would conspire to bring us face to face like this.

And then, it happened.

Nitara emerged from the opposite corridor, bathed in soft off-white saree radiating golden light, like an ethereal vision that had stepped out of a dream.

Her hair made into a messy bun, some strands falling over face, a few cascaded down her shoulder in perfect waves.

Her saree clung to her every curve, accentuating the woman she had become. Time had transformed her into something even more exquisite than my wildest imagination.

I watched her in awe as she adjusted her earring, her fingers brushing against her earlobe in a teasing manner, almost tantalising me to caress her with my fingers.

She was joining the rest for the ceremony and when her eyes met with Atty, a smile appeared on her lips, looking like the very essence of grace and beauty. God! She's beautiful.

Unwittingly, I stood up and began walking alongside the parallel corridor, matching her pace. My eyes never left her sight.

She reached Atty and greeted her family and friends. The heavens above seemed to sense the emotional turmoil within me, and before I knew it, raindrops began to fall from the sky.

I was standing at the edge, some drops of rain falling over my face. As the rain drenched me, I couldn't help but smile as I watched her. It reminded me of the time I first fell for her, the rain complimenting her beauty that day, exactly the way it was doing now.

She tucked her hair back, taking a strand of hair off her face and a part of me wanted to rush to her crossing this courtyard, to hold her, to tell her how much I had missed her all these years.

It was as if the universe was mirroring my heart, its tears washing away the pain of our separation and cleaning the past. My heart called for her, yearning to be near once more, to love her again with the same intensity I had all those years ago.

But then, she sensed my appearance, she definitely did. And our eyes finally met.

Time seemed to stop in that instant, as if the world itself was holding its breath.

I saw the pain in her eyes, the raw emotion she had buried deep within herself for so long. She tried to hold back the tears, but I could see the storm raging beneath the surface.

Her face, once so radiant and filled with laughter, now seemed blank, a reflection of the heartbreak that had torn us apart.

I couldn't help but blame myself for everything that had happened between us. It was my choices, my mistakes, that had led to our break-up.
