The sun rose. The sky a beautiful pink.
The two adventurers sat in a grassy hill by their tent. They yawned as they drank their coffee. "Man, that was the worst sleep of my life!" Laughed Betty. "I don't know if it was because of what I wanted to tell you, or the rock hard ground." Both of them laughed.
"Well I'm glad you told me how you felt. That was quite brave Betty." Simon remarked with a small smile. Betty smiled back. "It's definitely hard to get use to being out here though. In fact, one time I had to sleep in a tree!" He remembered. "Why were you up there"? Betty giggled. "Well... to be completely honest. It was my first time staying here by myself. I was about your age and scared out of my wits!" She laughed harder. Simon smiled watching her laugh. She was beautiful weather she laughed or cried. But he much preferred her laugh.
"What were you like when you were my age?" Betty asked intrigued. "Definitely not as brave as you!" He sipped his coffee. "I had a lot of things to figure out about myself. Most people saw me as some kid playing in the woods too much. Let alone trying to research things about our world." Betty seemed interested. "What kinds of things did you do for fun?" She asked. "Well, I would spend a lot of time at the library, I enjoyed sewing, quilting, and sketching. You know, all the things a grandma would enjoy." He snickered.
"What about- she started. Then Simon cut her off. "I want to know more about you Betty" she blushed. "What do you like to do in your spare time." Betty leaned back on the grass "hmm" she thought for a moment. "I like the library, catching up on my tv shows, cooking, playing video games, and music (when it's tasteful)." She said. "Average grandpa things." She chuckled.
The Professor scooted over closer to her. She sat upright and put her head on his shoulder. "Is this ok?" She asked. "Yes my dear. This is perfect." He leaned his head on top of hers. The two sat in silence for a moment. "What kind of music is tasteful to you?" Simon ask quietly with his eyes closed. "Songs with meaning. I want to feel something." She closed her eyes. "I don't care if it's sadness or love. I want to feel something." A couple of robins flew above them in the sky.
"You have an extraordinary way of perception Betty. I could listen to you all day." Simon remarked. "I'm probably not as deep as you think." She laughed. "I find that extraordinarily hard to believe." He smiled with a sigh.
The professor stood up with a stretch. "Are you ready to pack up and move forward?" He ask. "Yep!" Betty said excitedly. The two packed up the tent and put out the fire. They had started back on their journey. As they began walking together, Simon grabbed Betty's hand. "We've in this together." A big smile was on her face as they walked.
