a new day

Just like any other morning, Elizabeth had been downstairs early, Michael late, but this time Evan hadn't been there to be right in-between, and only 3 plates were set out. Michael sat across from Elizabeth as usual, but never looked at her once, both of them eating in silence.

Elizabeth kept a dead-set glare, making sure she could show her anger and frustration in some way. How could Michael have done that!? Evan was her brother too, and if it'd been up to her, he'd never have been pranked in the first place! It was just one thing she couldn't understand, why would Michael have done that? He knew Evan was scared of the animatronics.

Just like yesterday, William sat down for a few moments, eating, sipping a coffee, and then continuing to his own, leaving Michael and Elizabeth sitting alone once again, in continuous, awkward silence.

After what felt like forever, but only had actually been a few minutes, Elizabeth set down her utensils, slammed her hands onto the table as she stood, her stare was furious, disturbed by tears which pestered their way out.

She opened her mouth to yell, but couldn't seem to get more than a cry out, before bursting into full blown tears.

"Why did you take Evan away!? i HATE you!" Her shrill voice rang in Michael's ears as he processed her words toward him. He knew he was at fault, but it hurt just to hear his little sister scream at him.

Elizabeth ran off, the small taps of her shiny shoes against the hardwood floor going farther and farther until her bedroom door slammed.

Today was going to be a long day, a long day without Evan, who'd been there for years, now gone, something in the house felt empty, and of-course it would after what played out yesterday.

Michael stood up, then hearing the nearby telephone ring. He walked over to it, picking it up and placing it by his ear. "Hello?" his voice cracked slightly, he hadn't spoken since what he'd done.

"Hey!- Mike?" The familiar voice of one of his friends came through, and it was a shocker anyone would even ring after yesterday, with how it'd ended up.

"Uh, yeah. Hey," Mike spoke back, trying not to trail off, he knew he'd felt bad himself, but how could any of the others feel right now? if not murderers as-well they'd been accomplices, witnesses.

"I heard the news. I- I'm sorry, man." The words felt like ringing to Michael's ears, something un-comprehendible, like these were words in a conversation he wasn't meant to have if only he'd thought for just a single moment more.

"Yeah, uhm. I gotta go." His words were quick, just a rush to run away from this conversation in any way possible, to run away from the total and harsh truth that he caused his own brother's death.

He set the phone down, ending the call. All he wanted was to fix it, somehow, some way. And even if he couldn't fix it, he could try to make some sort of amends, starting with Elizabeth.
