Totally Not a Coincidence

"Are you sure you don't want a ride home?" My mom asks as we near the end of our conversation.

"Yes, yes he would." Tyrone interrupts, and I stare at him incredulously.

Oh hey, that's usually his face towards me.

"Okay. I'll be there in about two or three minutes." My mom tells me.

"Oh. That's nice." I say. Then I put a hand to my forehead and pull a cringe face. What am I saying? I hang up and tuck my phone away.

"Your nose doesn't look broken. Just take care of the bleeding and disinfect any open wounds, bandage the worst ones and ice the bruises. That should help you feel better."

I nod my head, then glance at Tyrone curiously.

"You know a lot of medical stuff." I say.

"Not really. That's just basic common sense stuff." Tyrone replies.

Oh right. Cause I don't have that, apparently.

When my mom arrives a few minutes later, I try to hide my face.

It doesn't work.

"Khai, what happened!?" My mom cups my face in her hands and she stares at me in concern for a few seconds before turning to Tyrone and approaching him.

Tyrone flinches and takes a step back.

"Did you do this to him!?" She questions in a voice I've never heard her use before because I'm a good kid.

"Mooooommm!" I groan, stopping her from getting any closer.

"He didn't do anything. In fact, he's the reason I'm not worse." I defend.

"Oh." My mom drops her hostile act.

"Sorry, I shouldn't jump to conclusions. You just really scared me Khai. I know you're fragile-"

My mom stops when my look tells her to. She turns to Tyrone.

"Thank you for helping him. Do you need a ride home? I could give you one." My mom offers.

Tyrone shakes his head.

"Nah." He says, raising his skateboard to indicate it's his ride home.

"Alright then. Khai, let's get you home and fix you up a little."

I wince as I place an ice-pack against my black eye. My mom is already busy brewing up some... whatever she does when I get hurt.

"Why don't you take a shower after this, Khai? That'll alleviate the pain a little, too. And I'll have supper ready when you're done." My mom says, gingerly dabbing a scrape on the side of my forehead.

"Sounds good."

"So..." My mom glances at me through the corners of her eyes. "This guy... what's his name?"

"Tyrone."

My mom makes a noise with her mouth.

"He seems nice."

"Yeah, with 'seems' being the key word."

"Well, he helped you out. That was nice."

"I guess. Maybe it's the other way around. Maybe he seems mean but is actually nice."

"Do you like him?"

"Mom!" I exclaim.

"What, I wanna know what's going on with you." My mom protests despite the smile on her face.
