Sitting around the table during breakfast the next morning, everything seems unusually quiet. And you know somethings up when Khai just keeps stirring his cereal instead of eating it.

He exchanges an inconspicuous glance with me, then studies his breakfast again.

"So..." He starts, directing it towards Hazel. "One of our friends is moving away. I don't know if you remember him but he stopped by when I stayed him from school that one day cause I passed out and I had a bad headache and I was watching a nature documentary- oh shoot I'm rambling..." Khai says, quickly stuffing a spoonful of cereal in his mouth.

"Yeah, you're talking about Zevon, right?" Hazel asks.

I clear my throat and Khai surprisingly doesn't choke when he swallows the mouthful that he couldn't have had time to chew properly.

"Uhh... you know him?" Khai asks. "Cause I'm pretty sure he left before I could properly introduce him to you. I don't think you made him feel very welcome."

"I know. I'm sorry. I've probably known him before you. Or more, his parents. They weren't very good people and I guess it just made me assume he wasn't either and if he's anything like his parents, he's the last person I'd want you hanging out with."

"What were his parents like?" Khai asks.

Hazel sighs.

"We don't need to go into all that." She replies.

Khai's shoulders slouch, and I can see he feels upset, though he doesn't say anything.

"I'm sorry your friend is leaving, though." Hazel adds.

"It's okay. We weren't close." Khai mumbles.

On the way to school, Khai keeps his head down and stays quiet, except for some occasional and subconscious huffing.

I can see he's upset, but it's strange because it feels new to me. Khai is usually in a good mood, and if he's not, it's because he's sensitive, or sad, or insecure. Never really angry. I've seen him grumpy before, usually when he has to wake and doesn't want to, but it's always been a cute kind of grumpy. And I guess I've seen him frustrated before, but something about this feels different. It makes me feel nervous, but I don't just want to ignore it... and him.

"Khai you seem genuinely upset. I'm pretty sure I've never seen you like this before." I mention.

Khai slows a bit and sighs.

"Well, it's all just getting to me. Learning these new things about my mom and realizing there's a bunch of stuff she doesn't tell me and even if it's for the better, it's just starting to get frustrating. And that whole thing with 'we don't need to go into all that'... well it's just... that's what she always says whenever I ask about her family. So all that told us is that it's from the past, which we already knew. It's hopeless now. I'd make a terrible detective."

"Hey, Khai, we hardly had a chance to say much. And we can still try different approaches. All is not lost. Besides, whatever happened involved more than just your mom, remember? We still have Jatix and your dad to question. Not to mention Killian's working on finding anything that might've been documented."

"I suppose... it's just... with everything that has happened over the last few days, learning about things my mom hasn't told me about that she should've, or things that she lied to me about... I don't know... I guess I wanted to hear it from her because she told me she wouldn't lie anymore. So if she was the one to tell me, then I could be reassured that I could trust her and that she'd still tell me things. But now it feels like she's being just as cryptic as always."
