It is part of the deal.
Children of parents who betrayed their government are allowed a chance to prove their loyalty. If they make it through the Riders Quadrant. They will need to find a way to survive a series of rigorous challenges and acquire a diverse set of skills over a three-year period. The Riders Quadrant is one of the most deadliest quadrants a human could choose on Conscription Day. Except for the children of the leaders, officers, and children of executed parents due to disloyalty. They are left without choice and are forced into conscription.
AELIN VERVAIN is one of those children whose parents were executed during the Tyrrish rebellion. She is tall, turquoise with golden circles around the pupils, silver hair and dark eyebrows. She is of lean build, and her facial features are recognized by sharp cheekbones as her skin is creamy in color. She is a daughter of betrayal.
It is one of the few things she has in common with
XADEN RIORSON. He is tall, onyx speckled with flecks of gold eyes, black hair, and dark eyebrows. His facial features are marked by a strong jawline, and his skin is tawny. Xaden has a diagonal scar that bisects his left eyebrow and marks the top corner of his cheek. He carries a rebellion relic, which is created by General Melgren's dragon with swirls and slashes.
It is another matter they have in common, the rebellion relic. The presence of these marks signifies that the individual's parents were involved in the rebellion.
Both Aelin and Xaden will have to cross a treacherous parapet, to enter Basgiath War College's Riders Quadrant. Upon entering the edifice of the Riders Quadrant, individuals are officially recognized as cadets. The initial year of their enrolment is a test of survival, where they must acquire both combat abilities and academic knowledge. The objective for this first year is to equip cadets with the skills necessary to conquer the Gauntlet.
This is followed by the Threshing phase, a unique opportunity for cadets to form bonds with dragons. Once this bond is established, they earn the esteemed title of riders.
