Chapter 2
As soon as the door of the flat clicked shut behind them, Caroline giggled. "So, you and Nate, huh ?"
For an unknown reason, Eliza's cheeks turned a deep shade of red at the mention of his name. Yet again, she felt humiliated by the reactions that damn boy brought out of her. It wasn't like he was even nice or anything. But there was something more to him than the jerk, something that made Eliza curious.
"There's no 'us'" she managed to reply.
Caroline smiled innocently. "That's not what I was implying."
Eliza send her an 'Are you kidding me' look that made Caroline raise her hands in defence.
"But seriously," said Caroline "I've lived next door to him for months and that was the longest conversation I've ever witnessed him have."
Eliza swallowed. "He seems like... like.. there's more to him than his sarcastic and uncaring demeanour."
Caroline smiled tightly. "I honestly don't know. Noah once said he had a difficult childhood but didn't add anything else. I doubt he knows more about him himself."
"Oh," said Eliza. "It must be hard to live with someone so... difficult."
"I guess but Noah doesn't pry. He'll wait until you feel comfortable enough to speak to him. But really... "
"But.. ?"
Caroline looked uncomfortable. "Be careful, Eliza. Nate is a jerk. He's the reason my last roommate left.. As soon as he was finished with her, he dumped her sorry ass."
After that last sentence, none of the new friends talked for a few minutes. Then, Eliza smiled a mischievous smile.
"So, you and Noah, huh ?" she asked, making Caroline's cheeks burn.
"Um... on with the tour of the apartment !" she squealed.
Eliza was curious to see the rest of the flat, so she decided to let Caroline's pathetic attempt at changing the subject go unnoticed.
"So, what do you think ?" Caroline waved her hand around. "I know it's not in the best neighbourhood, but I've live here for a while now and nothing bad ever happened. Plus, the rent is cheap and there's a bus one block away that leads directly to the campus."
Eliza smiled reassuringly. "I like it a lot here, actually. Plus, it's not like I can afford anything else, " she added sheepishly.
Caroline seemed taken aback. "I like you already. I'm glad you're not one of those girls"
"One of those girls ?"
"Yeah, you know, the kind of girls that like to pretend to be somebody they aren't ?"
For some reason, Caro was still looking at her weirdly.
"Oh !" Eliza blushed a little, what she had admitted a moment earlier now registering.
