Buffy waited by Mari's bedside till she woke up. A tearful happy Buffy was the first thing she saw. Under a dim light, Buffy thanked their fae gods out loud. Buffy said, " I thought I lost you again....I couldn't go through that one more time. How are you feeling?".
Mariposa against Buffy's gentle force sat up in bed. She replied, " I'm okay....just grateful to be alive. How are the others?".
Buffy reassured everyone was taken care of. There was a long silent pause between them. Tonight has been the first time they've seen each other in a decade. There was so much to say but no one dared to say their thoughts. Buffy invented an excuse to leave Mariposa alone. She couldn't comprehend what exactly she thought was going to happen tonight between them. Buffy thought about this moment millions of times. This is not how she imagined it would happen. Before she closed the door she stood in the door frame facing away from Mari.
" I heard from Mother Eve that you're betrothed to Prince Noah from the Draco Clan. When is the wedding?"
"I didn't know you and Mother Eve still kept in contact with the clan."
"Never mind that....Is it true?".
" There is no wedding Buffy. I can not marry someone I don't love."
"Is that why you didn't marry me?".
"No."
"Then. what was the reason?".
Buffy turned around to face Mariposa's teary brown eyes.
" I couldn't marry you because -".
Buffy quickly slammed the door behind her leaving Mari alone before she saw the first tear fall. Mariposa couldn't believe she still had tears for Buffy left in her after all these years.
As soon as she regained her strength, she stubbornly stumbled out of her room. One of the nurses came to aid her as she walked into their village plaza. Abandoned old stone castles and towers became the home for the dark fairies many years ago. Now, the updated castles overruled the mountainside, black dahlias, and pansies taking over the steep rocky hills and weeds covering the village walls.
The local faeries stared at her as she made her way to the center of the plaza. Her pointy ears twitched as she could hear the whispers and gasp about their arrival. Even though the circumstances and situation had now changed, they still hesitated to welcome them into their world.
Isla quickly rushed to her, embracing her with a solemn and supportive hug. Mariposa was grateful for the familiar face and voice. As she followed her, it became pretty clear how different the two villages were.
They dressed in fur, leather, and dark-colored clothes, with metal, sterling silver, and black chunky details. They were blunt, dark, mysterious, unapologetic, and ultimately free. She always admired those who gathered enough courage to leave their tribes and live a life that had no restrictions or judgment. These dark faeries were outcasted and isolated for now embodying the ways their ancestors intended. They lived organically and carefree. Something about this world captured her attention. An attraction and allure that made her feel almost at home. The only person who knew that this could also be Mariposa's home was Buffy.
Off to the right overlooking the forest, she noticed the weapons cabin. A constant flow of traffic both in and around caught her attention. As she walked up to the cabin she could see it was constructed from weathered timber and reinforced with rough-hewn stones, the weapons cabin stood in harmonious accord. Mariposa's feet felt heavy as she walked in. The safety of her sisters and revenge were the only two things on her mind.
The black velvet curtains brushed against her body as she walked into the armory. Mariposa's eyes were met with walls and tables filled with hundreds of weapons. She has never seen weapons like these in her home. The ' Light' Mothers banned dangerous weapons and tactics from their clan and teachings when she was a young adult. Mariposa and the rest of the Lumina clan were only taught to survive inflicting minimal damage not to kill.
