"Come to Alyeska."

Ladies and Gents, Megan Davis. My best friend.

I'm still stunned that Meg is awake at this hour. "Come again?"

"You should come to Alyeska with me. It's in Alaska." Tell me why she is now just bringing this up.

"Alaska?"

"Yeah, you know. Outrageously cold. Lots of snow. Northern Lights. All that... jazz."

"I know what Alaska is, Meg. I'm just simply curious as to why you are asking me to go with you. Not that I don't want to, I'm just confused."

Megan rolls her eyes "Well, I was trying to get a refund for that cabin I rented out, but the lady wouldn't give it to me. And you know I was supposed to go with Chris, but then he cheated on me. Naturally."

One would think she'd be heartbroken, but he was never good to her, so she didn't mind. Safe to say she dodged a bullet with that one.

"Anyway," Meg continues "Now I need someone to go with me so I'm not miserable. And you're the perfect person to ask because I love you and you have nowhere to go for winter break."

I take a good thirty seconds to consider the consequences and conclude that there are none. "Alright, I'll go. When do we leave?"

Meg looks at her watch and smiles "In about four hours."

"Four hours? Are you serious Megan?"

I sigh at our urgency to leave and get up from my bed realizing that I need to pack. I was supposed to go to my parent's house for the next month, yet they found one excuse after the other to avoid seeing me. I used to have a great relationship with them when I was younger, but growing up with no siblings meant all the pressure was riding on me. I guess they weren't happy with the fact that I wanted to be a figure skater, not a doctor.

When I was fourteen, I wanted to become the best skater there ever was. I started pushing myself every day, slowly breaking my body in hopes of making it to the Olympics. I craved attention from my parents and did everything to please them. Nothing worked. After I was accepted to UMich they rarely reached out to me. Hence, I've decided to go to Alaska with Meg.

An hour later Meg comes out of her room, "Okay, bags all packed?"

"Yes, ma'am."

She grins "Wait until you see what we have rented out."

Oh dear. Let me just say, that Megan is rich. Like really rich. I wouldn't be surprised if she secured a literal mansion. I guess we'll see when we get there.

Ladies and gentlemen,we have arrived in Anchorage, Alaska. The local temperature is 17°F with light snowfall. Thank you for choosing Alaska Airlines. I hope you enjoyed your flight.

Our arrival in Alaska was smoother than I expected.

Once we stepped off the plane, Megan was on the move. I honestly thought she was going to burst from excitement.

"Meg, slow down." My legs are going to combust if she keeps this up.

My words seemed to be effective given that she stopped right in the middle of the airport causing me to slam straight into her. "I didn't mean it that literally. A warning would have been nice," I mumbled.

"Sorry Mei," she responded sheepishly.

"You're okay, you know I'm messing with you."

She took this as an invitation to start running again.

Somebody give me a damn inhaler.

❅ ❅ ❅

"But if you're too drunk to drive and the music is right," I sing along.

Megan continues "She might let you stay, but just for the night." I'm going to let her take this one.

Megan keeps harmonizing while we drive through the snowcapped mountains. It's about a forty-minute drive to the cabin and then we can finally settle in and relax.

"I'm so happy you decided to come with me, Meilani. I think this will be good for you. No practice. No parents. No pressure. Consider your problems solved. You're welcome."

Megan is one of the few people who know my relationship with my family.

I met her freshman year at a party, where I found her throwing up in the bathroom. We exchanged numbers that night and became instant friends. I don't have to beg about anything when it comes to her. I could complain about the most random things or life in general and I don't hear a single judgment. She's just there. Always. She understands me and heals me. It's as if the universe knew I needed her.

"Thanks, Megs. I really need this."

"I know you do."

"Hallelujah."

Forty long ass minutes in the car was enough for me. Beyond blessed to get the hell out and curl up near the fireplace with a hot tea. "Let's get our things and get ins-"

Holy mother of dragons. This place is insane.

"Hey, Meg. Just curious again. How did you manage to get the biggest property possible?"

She laughs "Oh, this is nothing. Wait until you get inside, I swear this place is full of surprises."

Oh, word? I can't tell if I love or hate rich people.

Megan fiddles with the keys and eventually pushes the icy door open.

"Woah."

"Yeah, woah."

"C'mon let's go check out the view from the living room," Meg starts. This whole situation is beyond me. I can't believe I decided to fly to Alaska this morning. Best decision I've made all year.

We could hear distant voices as we traveled further into the house. I immediately stopped walking and looked at Megan to see if she knew what was happening, but her face told me that she had just as many questions as I did.

"Go," I whisper.

"No, you go."

"Hell no. Absolutely not. What if it's a murderer."

Megan stares at me. I stare back with a pointed look.

She finally gives up "Okay fine, I'll go first."

We turned the corner, scared for our lives, and spotted two men around our age talking. Well, more like one talking excessively with his hands and the other listening with a bored expression.  Either way, there were other guests that we didn't know about.

I looked at Meg irritatingly "Full of surprises, huh?"
